Olympic Heroes: Isaac Kashdan by
OlimpBase
"This is our new series devoted to those, who did not earn worldwide credit
adequate to their chess skills and Olympic achievements. One of them is
certainly Isaac Kashdan (born 1905), relatively unknown US player. In fact
he was one of strongest players of the world in early 30's. Even Alekhine
mentioned one day that Kashdan might be next World Champion. (...)"

Arnold Schwarzenegger for USCF Executive Board !!! by
Sam Sloan
A call to the USCF Offices has revealed a gaggle of disgruntled and
disgusted gripers who have filed petitions to be elected to the USCF
Executive Board. Many of those filing are unknown in the world of
chess. More are expected to file before the final deadline on
Wednesday. The only significant person who has not filed thus far is
Arnold Schwarzenegger. Therefore, somebody should draw up and...

PWC ratings and Elo by
Alan O'Brien
Anyone out there like cricket?
In cricket PriceWaterhouseCooper's Ratings are used
http://www.cricket.pwcglobal.com/cricket/cricket.htm
which give a cricketer a rating between 0 and 1000.
The rating is worked as described here
http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1385.
I have a feeling that this system is more accurate at determining ability

Dicktator at ICC.. by
michael adams
G'day gruppen,
Recently while happily playing chess on ICC I was disagreeably informed
my right to add time to my opponents clock had been stopped. In effect
unregistered players are now denied this privelege. I feel for my
victims & like to encourage them from time to time with a little extra
of the aforementioned. It would seem that some dictatorial fungus at ICC
is now truly laying down the...

Game Situation by
Sam Sloan
Some years ago I was playing in a non-rated team match. The opposing
team consisted of scholastic players. I was recruited to play first
board for the Lynchburg team because our team was short one player.
I played a nice combination and won a piece in the opening. I was
thinking about having the game published. However, my opponent refused
to resign. He just kept playing. Finally, I was two...

Woman's Round Robin by
Sam Sloan
We should discuss, either now or later, what should have been done
differently to prevent this from happening.
I believe that because of this incident the provision that the winner
of the US Championship gets a spot on the Olympic team will be
dropped. That is a new rule anyway. A few years ago, an even lower
rated player, Elina Groberman, won the US Woman's Championship. She
has never even...

A Classic game between two idiots! by
Matt Nemmers takes it in the ass both on and off t
Clear Day
If you think I doctored the info (I didn't), you can see for yourself at:
http://ourworld.cs.com/dubuquechess/id15.htm?f=fs
This game is annotated by the resident idiot Matt Nemmers himself(I added to
his feeble annotation somewhat). Nice 904 rating Matty boy! If you had any
doubt about this imbecile being a fetal-alchohol baby, just look at the

i want to MAKE something! by
Mattia
Hi!
i'm 30 years old, electronic engineer, have a job that has to do with
the net, good knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol (and all the family)
some time to use... because of my job I have plenty of band and plenty
of space on the net. Plus I have tecnichal competence, but I have no
idea of what to do with them: i would like to make something for chess
on the net (set up a server? a web page? an...

Chess Query Language by
Tim Krabbé
Chess Query Language is a wonderful tool, developed by Lewis Stiller and
Gady Costeff, to find positions and themes in game- or endgame study
databases. It is much more powerful than any existing facilities.
Read my piece about it in Open Chess Diary on http://www.timkrabbe.nl/chess

Dos Hermanas tournament and (C)heating by
Doctor Unclear
I've received several info which lead me to think that there might
have been many suspicions of cheating coming from ICC speedtrap group
in the Dos Hermanas tournament, justifying ICC of kicking out of
suspected participants.
ComradeZukovsky seems that he would be willing to speak up:
"1. I have unfairly been disqualified from the Dos Hermanas Tournament
and
so will be seeking a refund and not...

Rate My Game? by
Mark A. Morenz
Hi All:
I've been playing since I was 3 (32 years), but am still a weak club
player (900 OTB, 1400 Yahoo, etc). I once paid a 2000 player to
analyze my games; and, while that was useful, it was less so than I
hoped for. He basically saw every other move that either I or my
opponent made as an error.
He did say I seemed to have about a 1600-level understanding of
strategy (I have been playing a...

Kamsky, Bjelica and Fischer by
Goran Tomic
I asked my friend Dimitrije Bjelica about the information that he could
become General Secretary of FIDE (if Gata Kamsky become FIDE President).
He has informed me that Mr. Kamsky and he plan to build the house for young
chess players from all over the world, in Igalo (Serbia and Montenegro). It
would be nice and could have great importance in the chess progress and
chess education in this part...

I have been trying to transfer databases from my desktop to my laptop either
via a transfer cable or by copying them onto CDs and floppies and loading
them. This doesn't work, even with my own games. How do I do this?

Corruption??: Did the USCF change rules so as to block "Dream Team"
from competing?
It has come out in the last 24 hours that in August 2003 the Activity
Rules for USCF Invitational Competition were changed. The new rules
are posted at:
http://www.uschess.org/scholastic/03inviterequirements.php
I would like to know who changed these rules and the process by which

I have played the Petrov successfully for many years and I still have not
figured this out. Maybe some of you masters in here can give me a hand.

The move 8 . Re1 is given no attention by virtually any resource on this
defense. The few that do explain that Re1 is no longer played because after

chess game mail by
Mattia
Hi!
I play chess on the net very often (on server FICS). Sometimes the
server sends me the scores of my games by email (in a standard PGN
format), so I have to save the message as a text file and then open it
with another program.
Is there a way to make a mail FILTER that automatically saves messages
with certain rules?
This would be of much help!!
