20 Second Chess in London by

Could be a good one for you 1 minute ICC specialists.
http://www.20secondschess.com/
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
The standard rules of chess apply.
However in 20 Seconds Chess the new 20/20 rule also applies.
The 20/20 rule is as follows:
1) Both players start with 20 seconds on the clock (20/20)
2) When the game commences and the clock starts, White's clock

what to do to get to the next level? by
KDP
i've always enjoyed playing chess, even though i was never really good
at it. i bought some books and read posts here and articles about
strategy, and now it seems to being paying off in the sense that i'm
now winning more than i lose. most of the games i've played have been
against players of equal rating (depending on the site) 1300 to 1500.
my question now is what should i be doing to take...

Oldtimer explains the sanctions imposed on him by

All true, unlike the other responses to my post, which is the usual
case which is why I voted for Sam. I would say I strongly agree with
most of what Sam says. While others were allowing or apologizing for
others highly dubious credentials for the EB and was sanctioned on the
following day. Similarly, he has consistently been accurate about the
USCF finances, or at least what little we know of...

Susan Polgar proposal to save the USCF Legal Fees?? by
samsloan
I have read her statement on susanpolgar.blogspot.com and on
chessdiscussion.com and I have no idea what she is trying to say.
Susan Polgar wrote, " I have made an official proposal to the board
which will save the USCF tens and thousands and perhaps even hundreds
of thousands of dollars in legal fees."
Of course, she could save the USCF some legal fees by resigning, but I
doubt that is what...

Guy Macon on how many chess positions are possible by
Kenneth Sloan

Alas, your disproof is not sound. A significant percentage of the
possible positions calculated by your method have multiple states
that make them different positions. Let's start with:
White to move/black to move (this alone multiplies your number by 2)
White can/cannot castle queen side
White can/cannot...

Don Schultz answers some questions by
samsloan
Thank you for your interesting post.
The point I want to make here is that, even though I disagree with
many of your ideas, at least you have ideas and are willing to work
hard to achieve them.
So far, among the four newly elected members of the board, I have yet
to see any of them suggest any ideas. I have not seen even one idea,
good or bad, old or new, come out of the four new board members....

Controlling the Moderators for Political Advantage by

With this I agree completely although perhaps not in ways that you
would like.
At the beginning of the election campaign, Goichberg supported Polgar
and any posting on the USCF Issues Forum even mildly critical of
Polgar or asking her embarrassing questions such as whether she was
married or not was not allowed.
Polgar became known by various euphemisms including "The Name that One
Dare Not...

Sam Sloan responds to Donna Alarie by

Donna,
I am surprised that you would say this because I thought that you had
learned a few lessons from last year. You write, "We watched last year
as every discussion circled around Mr. Sloan or censuring him."
However, those discussions all involved three board members, Bill
Goichberg, Joel Channing and Randy Hough. The other three board
members, myself, Don Schultz and Beatriz Marinello were...

Titles of chess books that might confuse a layman by
Offramp
Non-chess players, if they just saw the title of a chess book, might
be really puzzled as to what that book might be about.
For example:
The Sicilian Labyrinth by Lev Polugaevsky
Thinks: "A Russian investigative reporter investigates the Mafia".
Understanding the Spanish:
"They are a bit far-out, I suppose."

in round 3. Magnus Carlsen experienced some difficulty against Arkadij

Silence of the Board by
samsloan
How many have noticed that since the board meeting in Crossville on
November 3-4, 2007, there has been almost complete silence from the
board?
Actually, ever since the new board took over on August 5, 2007, the
board has been generally quiet. However, during the last three weeks,
I do not recall any postings by any member of the board.
Also, the BINFO system is dead. There have been no exchange...

a book/website teaching chess knowledge? by
Folkert van Heusden
Hi,
Apart from the basic chess-rules, are there also books (or even websites)
that teach as much as possible chess nice-to-knows?
E.g.: it's good if a knight attacks weak pawns, or a rook on an open file is
good. Stuff like that.
Thanks in advance!
