Lev Khariton: Linares, the Last Tabloid?! by
Aryeh Davidoff
Aryeh Davidoff: Here is Lev Khariton's latest column at 200 Words at
www.pakchess.com
What is unfolding now in Linares can be justly called the nightmare of
modern chess. One has to be a Tartakower of chess journalism to find a
more fitting definition of Linares: TABLOID! A tournament, once
controlled by the stern Mr.Rentero, has obviously got out of hand, and
the top-flight grandmasters are...

Seymon Furman by
Alan O'Brien
I found out the other day that Furman's colleagues jokingly called him the
'World Champion playing white'.
Apparently he was very hard to beat when he was white.
Does anyone have any figures?
Who might have this title today?

Karpov withdraws in Benidorm
(December 1st, 2003)
This is what I have just read at TWIC by Mark Crowther:
The Russian GM Anatoli Karpov, former world champion, withdrew
yesterday from the Tournament of Stars, which is being contested in
the Hotel Bali in Benidorm. The reason was that he was declared losing

Digital clock opinions... by
Bobby C.
I'm in the market for a higher end ($80+ USD) digital clock and would like
some comments from folks that have them and use them pretty regularly. I am
a former high-school and college player (back in the old BHB clock days) who
took a two decade hiatus and am returning to some OTB play. I'm looking for
a clock that can take the pounding of a two minute game but is flexible
enough to handle...

Online commentary at Chessbase for Linares by
Phil Innes
I note that actual IM and GM commentators don't see the possibility in chat
groups, and comment instead on any precedent in the openings, any deviations
(which are certainly the result of days of study, not 20-ply Fritz).
Today for example we have not one but two fascinating Chelyabinsk Pelikans -
probably an opening you shouldn't even try unless rated 2000 - the dynamic
complications are...

USCF ratings, then vs. now by
Jud McCranie
I've been out of chess for a long time. Are USCF ratings earned now
comparable to ones earned 30-35 years ago? (My brother-in-law said
that below the 2000 level, USCF ratings are very inflated compared to
what they used to be, but I don't know if he is right.)

Spyware at chessanytime.com by

The following sites are making extensive use of SPYWA
www.chessanytime.com
I recently tried chessanytime.com, but found it inferior to FICS =
www.freechess.org in many ways.
In comparison to FICS, chessanytime.com:
- has no compensation for lag
- has a very limited graphical interface

You make no mention of FICS = www.freechess.org? It's free, and surely is
better than instantchess.com, especially when used with a free graphical
interface like iNemesis www.ideabuilders.com/public/

eChess.co.za = turngames.com by
Gregory Topov
Anyone have any experience with the eChess turn-based (email) chess website
echess.co.za = turngames.com? There seem to be a huge number of registered
players there, and I'd love to get some feedback about the site from players
more familiar with it. My emails to the webmaster go unanswered. Thanks for
any comments anyone can offer about it!

New beginner level chess program - Needle-0.50 - released! by
Mikko Nummelin
I have written a chess engine and put it available for free download in
address
http://www.math.hut.fi/~mnummeli/needle/
It does not yet play good chess as there are many known issues to be fixed
like inferior evaluation function, too much time consuming move generation
and just a beta-test-level opening book, but I think it can be a good
opponent for beginners.

Online Chess Play Sites by
Gregory Topov
Mark Weeks has finished his fifth and final article comparing and
contrasting online play sites:
http://chess.about.com/library/weekly/aa04a24.htm
I found his assessment fairly balanced, although the services were often
judged on the basis of the java clients - eg FICS was judged overly harshly
on the basis of JavaBoard, whereas if Weeks had downloaded and tried a
graphical interface perhaps he...

Origin of Goldman (Spielmann) variation of the Caro-Kann by
Shah Mati
I am curious if any one knows why the move sequence 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Qf3
is called the Goldman (Spielmann) variation of the Caro-Kann? I cannot find
any references to Spielmann (or Goldman, for that matter) having ever played
it. The earliest game I have is Smyslov-Flohr, 1950.
