Feb 2004 Golden Database by
Matt Nemmers
In the Member's Area of the USCF's website, you can download the rating
supplements. This is usually a very handy tool, but when I downloaded the
32MB February 2004 Golden Database and replaced my previous files with what
was contained in the zip, all I get when I try to look people up is a bunch
on non-sensical numbers.
Is there going to be a fix put online soon?
Regards,

chess burnout by
Sandy Breon
I have not played chess for a week. I feel burnt out. This is only the
second time this has happened to me in the past two years. The previous time
it happened to me, I came back with a vengeance and did quite well.
My chess regimen has typically involved daily playing/training (average of
2+ hours), 1 chess lesson per week, and 1 chess tournament every month or
two. I doubt that overtraining is...

Chess Fever by
Chuck Coleman
Recently, I got a DVD of the comedy "Chess Fever"
from Blockbuster.com. It's a silent film, about
half an hour long. If you like comedies and
chess, this is a good one. Released in 1925.
Here is a review by Jeremy Silman:

IM Silman Rest of World match by
Tryfon Gavriel
Hi all
I am shocked by the level of interest shown so far in the Silman vs Rest of
world match being held at Chessworld. Currently at type of typing, there are
now approaching 300 team members, which is a record attendence for such a
game on Chessworld.net.
Players vote their moves and have a discussion forum to discuss tactics and
strategy against IM Silman. The highest voted move is...

"Chess Artist" vs. "Bobby Fischer Goes to War" by
Karl Farmer
Of these two books, I much prefer the first to the second. The fact
is Fischer is old news. "The Chess Artist" tells the whole history of
the game, and gives it all in terns of simuls, blindfolds, big
tournaments, the history of chess problems, the ICC, etc. "...Goes to
War" tells a story we've all heard a million times and makes some
terrible blunders along the way. The chess world is better...

The loss of Linares by
zdrakec
A glance at the crosstable at Linares will reveal the loss that chess
at the highest levels is suffering from these days: a lack of fighting
spirit. The players are AFRAID to take risks against their strongest
rivals.
It is a particular disappointment to play over the games of modern
"super-tournaments", and then look through the scoresheets from such
tournaments as, for example, New York 1924...

Punishing Pawn Pushers - Part 2 by
Dave
In the first thread "Punishing Pawn Pushers" someone asked for a few
lines from a game. Well here is a complete game I played with a
friend that pushes pawns at me during the opening. I wind up feeling
trapped by these pawns and start scratching around for moves, bad idea
for sure. My friend and I are both new to Chess and are interested in
comments from the Chess group.
Thanks,
Dave

Ulf Andersson Game by
Eopithecus
I have a game in my database played in 1962 between Botvinnik and Ulf
Andersson. This doesn't seem right. I Can't see a player of
Botvinnik's caliber playing an 11 year old child from Sweden. Did Ulf
actually play that game as a child??

How large can a 5 round tournament get? by
B Paton
Last year about this time I asked for advice about whether one can exceed 32
players in a 5 round swiss tournament and still get a clear winner. Many
kind folks assured me that I could exceed the theoretical limit by a few
players without requiring a 6th round. The advice was sound and my
tournament went well.
My question for this year: how high can I reasonably go? Is 45 way too may,
even...

Shredder 8-Junior 8, at game 30, Shredder squares up, 50% Live games! by
Anson
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ansonwilliams/chess/junior8test/
Shredder, this time determined not to be out done has squared up the score
after
winning the last 3 consecutive games. After losing round 26 to a
questionable
line of the french defence as white, it managed to get 2 wins as white
playing
2. Nc3! to Junior's french defence (rounds 28 and 30).
