Chess vs shogi (was: Why chess is never popular) by
Gregory Topov
"John Rowland" wrote in message
...
Surely a significant factor of Shogi's popularity as a media spectacle is
that while draws are theoretically possible, in practice they hardly ever
happen. For this reason, it is a lot easier to imagine a future where
Shogi
receives mainstream western media coverage...

Falkbeer as chess journalist by
Jeremy Spinrad
A comment about Falkbeer in a chess book made me wonder. In discussing his role
as a chess journalist in England and Germany, a modern writer says that he brought
"mehr schlecht als Recht" into his column. Anyone know what gave rise to this
negative view of Falkbeer? I know he had a column in The Sunday Times, and that
Staunton resented this as he resented all foreigners having columns, but...

OT: States listing online sales tax line item by
Alberich
My home state in the Northeast is now listing a line item telling
taxpayers to list how much we owe state coffers for online purchases for
the past year. (This has been theoretically on the books for years, but
only now is this item actually being printed on the tax return forms.)
But upon further investigation on different sources online and in
print...I'm seeing that this so called requirement...

Why chess is never popular by
Al
Chess will never be popular because the participants in top events can
simply "chicken out" by agreeing to a draw. The latest example is
Corus where Adams and Anand just agree to a draw right out of the
opening (if Adams won, we would be tied for the lead with Anand).
They can agree to a draw in an extremely unclear position when the
spectators really want to see it played out! The suspense of...

Alekhine and the Jews by
Jeremy Spinrad
Just a note from my recent reading. In 1926, the Vienna chess scene divided
into 3 camps. There was the worker's chess group, which viewed chess as a way of
strengthening the proletariat and building Socialism, the German Nationalists,
who didn't allow Jews and other into their clubs, and the Jewish chess
organization, formed in reaction to the Nationalist clubs but without the overt
political...

The Fourth Defect of Chess by
John Savard
On my web page, at
http://www.hypermaths.org/quadibloc/chess/cheint.htm
I discuss the fact that people have, particularly in recent times,
proposed variants of chess in order to remedy perceived defects in the
game.
I note three things about the game of chess that could be considered
as problematic.

Draw offer question by
Neil Coward
The following happened in a rapidplay yesterday.
Its white to move, white offers a draw. Black says well make your move and I
will think over your draw offer. White makes his move. Black thinks for a
few minutes then says "ok I will accept the draw". White now says the draw
is no longer on offer because I've moved.
The arbiter said white had to accept the draw having offered it. On top of
that...

World Record Attempt TODAY by

ChessBrain's game against GM Nielsen was a draw by repetition, after some
tactical fireworks in a complicated position. PGN to follow, when it's
available.
Early reports suggest that the number of computers that produced
ChessBrain's moves peaked over 2000.
This is now confirmed. The official web-site states:

Eric Angelini
It took me almost five (5 !) hours altogether, yesterday,
to find the beautiful solution to this chess puzzle :
« Reconstruct the only possible chess game that
ends with »
(by François Labelle and computer, jan. 2004)
This means that Black checkmates White at the tenth "half-
move" (ply) of the game by placing it's Rook on the square

OT : Shogi promotion? by
dajava
Hi,
Let me make a hypothetical situation.
"My pwan is in enemy's zone now.
But, I did not promote it intentionally before.
Ten moves passed.
Now, can I promote it to Gold and capture a piece of enemy's?"

Lev Khariton:Kasparov and the chess "horizon" by

Aryeh Davidoff:Here is Lev Khariton's column for Feb.1,2004
"Kasparov and the chess "horizon"
When I was a small boy I used to ask, watching the sea landscape, what
was there behind the horizon? I was sure behind it was the end of the
world. I am sure many children throughout ages have been asking the
same question. Naturally being small kids they could not understand
that the horizon is...

free internet chess servers: goodbye USCL ... hello FICS! by
Jestrada
uschesslive.org / chess-live.com has gone pay only. No more free
membership or rated play.
When chess.net went pay-only, and kasparovchess.com went bust just
over a year ago, there were two basic choices remaining for free
internet chess server play: chess-live.com (USCL) and freechess.org
(FICS). Although USCL had the disadvantages of (a) less players than
FICS; (b) limit of 15 rated games a...

37. Be4! (Deep Blue-Kasparov 1997 Game 2) - can Fritz & Junior match Deep Blue? by
Gregory Topov
The following sequence of moves is from Kasparov's loss with black in Game 2
of the 1997 Rematch with Deep Blue:
36. axb5 axb5 37.Be4!
Because it gains material, both Kasparov and the world expected Deep Blue to
play 36. Qb6 or 37. Qb6. Surprisingly, Deep Blue rejected material gain
for positional advantage just as a human grandmaster would, by playing 36.
axb5 axb5 37.Be4! Be4 stunned...

Aryeh Davidoff: Rene Chun supports Lev Khariton by
Aryeh Davidoff
After the publication of my appeal on March 9th, 2003 to support Bobby
Fischer’s return to the United States I received many letters
from chess players and fans sharing my stand. Among those letters I
would single out the one from Rene Chun, the author of the article
“Bobby Fischer’s Pathetic Endgame” in
“Atlantic Monthly”. I appreciate Rene’s...
