Old laments about too much theory by Jeremy Spinrad
It seems that complaintss about too much theory go very far back, well into the romantic era. What is the oldest such complaint known? I found this one in an Austrian paper called The Humorist, August 27, 1858. Reporting on the Morphy-Loewenthal match, with Morphy ahead 7-3-1, the writer claims to be a strong chessplayer (just a pawn weaker than Grimm), but that pure chess has been replaced with...

Yes, I am running by Sam Sloan
Frank Camaratta has resigned from the USCF Executive Board over the decision by the board to "outsource" the books and equipment business. I believe that the decision to outsource the books and equipment business is a major mistake which may well be the death knell of the USCF. Over the last 65 years that the USCF has been in business, the only consistently profitable area has been the sale of...

No Anand in Linares 2004? by Abu Ali
He is currently the strongest player and should be invited in the strongest tournament. Or is it that the morally bankrupt Gary used his influence somehow to keep him out so that he may win and keep his rating points from coming down.

World Football Elo Ratings by Alan O'Brien
I didn't know that Elo ratings were used for other sports. If you put 'World Football Elo Ratings' into Google the top link should give you 'eloratings.net' - I couldn't get the link on my browser bar. France is currently top with a rating of only 2022 - even I could beat them! Alan

Jason Lives! by Jason
My beloved brothers in chess: I am so happy to be back with you again. I know how much you all missed me. Remember all the fun we used to have with The Drunken Lord? I miss him too! I haven't been a regular here since I challenged everybody to solve a problem in a certain number of moves, and then called everyone who proved it couldn't be done an idiot. I was kind of embarrassed, so I stayed...

Chess will be solved in the year 2168 by Gregory Topov
Chess will be solved in the year 2168. At least, that's the interesting theory proposed on this web page: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~kunegis/hack/chess/ The text below is quoted from that web page (view the web page to see the superscript and other formatting correctly). My comment: Will distributed computing (e.g. the ChessBrain project) help in attempts to "solve" chess sooner?

Why beginners should not resign after blunders in blitz/rapid. by Gregory Topov
In a game with intermediate/expert chess players, if you blunder away a piece it usually makes good sense to resign because there is little doubt that your opponent will use the advantage to win. My theory is if the game is between beginners, however, you should *not* resign in such positions. Two reasons: REASON 1: It is not the person who blunders *first* who should lose, but the

A question about Bobby Fischer by Marco
Why does he need to hide in Japan? His father was a German citizen, so he's a German too, and can easily settle there. Germany does not extradite its citizens anywhere. Marco -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG

My Chess Rating Progress by James Thornton
I started playing chess a little less than a year ago, I have only played online via ICC, and I want to check my rating progress as compared to how others progress after a year of play. Are there any sites online that correlate chess ratings with years of play? My initial ICC rating was about 1000, and I'm around 1550 now. Thanks.
