Aryeh Davidoff:Lev Khariton on Soviet Chess School by Aryeh Davidoff
Aryeh Davidoff: Lev Khariton's 200 Words on Soviet Chess School January 26th, 2004 About two years ago there was a heated discussion at www.kasparovchess.com as regards the so-called Soviet Chess School. Practically, all the analysts of this site (GM Sergey Shipov being, so to speak, their ring-leader) were dead against me single-handedly defending the view that the Soviet Chess School had never...

Need Tips in Teaching my 6yr son to play chess by Marky Marc
I should be very glad that my son is showing sucha huge interest in learning chess but I am a bit perplexed on how to each him at this young age. He knows how to set the board up for black and white. He has a great memory. He knows how the pieces move although he can forget that a piece can go long range. He forgets that the horse can go up 1 and over 2 as much as it can go up 2 and over 1. It...

Chess players with the names of revolutionaries by chapman Billy
Jerzy's Ciruk's recent comment on the Kremlin and Kramnik has spurred me to this piece of chess trivia; is there a list of players who have names similar, but not necessarily identical, to those of revolutionaries? I can immediately think of three: Boris Gelfand we all know about (I hope), he can be paired with the revolutionary Parvus, whose real name was Alexander Gelfhand or Helphand. I won't...

My solution for a new World Championship match by Alberich
Drop the Seirwan Prague/Dortmund agreement. I'd bypass the stupid knockout tournament idea that FIDE is floating around. I'd choose the matches this way: GM Judit Polgar vs GM Peter Svidler quarterfinal match with the winner facing GM Vishy Anand or Kasparov. GM Peter Leko vs GM Vassily Ivanchuk quaterfinal match with the winner facing GM Classical World Champion Kramnik.

Charles Partos by wb
Hello there, does anyone know true Christian name of Swiss IM Charles Partos. Partos was Romanian expatriate who left for Switzerland during Iron War era. Charles was apparently given name for purposes of the Swiss people only since the Romanians do not own up to know this sort of name (Charles) in local language. What was his original name then?

50/100 move draw rule by Jud McCranie
Back in my day, the 50-move draw rule was extended to 100 moves for certain endings that require more than 50 moves to win. Something I was reading recently implied that the extension to 100 moves was no longer in effect. Is that right? ------------------------------------- Replace you know what by "j" to email.

Aryeh Davidoff: Lev Khariton on Mikhail Tal by Aryeh Davidoff
Aryeh Davidoff: Not to be missed! Lev Khariton's deeply personal insight into the life and personality of Mikhail Tal.I wonder who will dare to award prizes for chess journalism to Sierawan and his likes after reading Lev's masterpiece? Mikhail Tal, the Chess Player Ahead of Chess By Lev Khariton I remember well the last day of June in 1992. Exactly ten years ago! I

Question regarding FIDE Laws of Chess by Ryan Haskell
Folks, Please forgive my lack of chess wisdom! Can someone explain to me how these two laws apply? 6.12 If both flags have fallen and it is impossible to establish which flag fell first, the game shall continue. 10.3 If both flags have fallen and it is impossible to establish which flag fell first the game is drawn.

A natural careless personality by ΤΜ. ΠΛΗΡΟΦΟΡΙΚΗΣ ΝΟΜΑΡΧΙΑ ΦΛΩΡΙΝΑΣ
Hello, I want to ask you for advise. My personality is not identified as a man with observant abilities. Unfortunately this is obvious with my style of playing chess. I have lost important games because I did no see a simple combination in one move. Usually I am good to find the right strategic plan to win but this is useless when I cannot see the simple combination. I believe that I am good when...

Reuben Fine in 1948 by Alan O'Brien
I feel sorry for the great Reuben Fine. He was the strongest player in the world in 1938-39. Even if WWII hadn't happened Alekhine would never have granted him a match - even though he apparently offered Keres a few cracks at the title during the war. When the war ended Fine was out of practice and Botvinnik wasn't; so I think MMB would have won the 1948 WC tournament whether or not R Fine took...
