8th place in London 1851, again by Jeremy Spinrad
Some time ago, a poster questioned whether Mucklow had in fact received an 8th place prize in London 1851. I had never heard any such claim; my tournament book shows 8 prizes awarded with Mucklow getting 8th. Although I still believe that Mucklow did receive an 8th place prize, I was surprised to see that Der Humorist, July 30, 1851, lists only 7 prize winners for the tournament, so there may...

Those embarassing moments (OT) by chapman Billy
(Nick) wrote in message You were correct. David Ames seems to have mistakenly assumed that General Homma was tried by the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal. Need advice for an elementary chess club by Pleasant Lady
Hi all... I'm a volunteer at an elementary school, and we have a floundering chess club that just started last year. I need advice. Does anyone recommend any materials, resources, links, books, or have any ideas as to how to "run" a chess club for YOUNG KIDS (grades 1-4). Our kids are mostly beginners. We can tell them to play the game, and we can teach them the fundamentals, but can anyone...

I hate chess slumps. by EZoto
I've been playing internet chess and all of a sudden I'm hanging everything in site. How the heck do you get out of one of these slumps? I played 3 games and in 2 of them I just hang my Queen like an early Christmas present while the other I hang a piece in 7 moves. EZoto

testyourchess.com - comments? by Gregory Topov
I recently discovered the website http://www.testyourchess.com, and am very favorably impressed so far. After assessing your approximate chess playing ability with a quick test, it has two main features: 1. Find the Moves: You play through a (real) game, at each move deciding what you would play in the given position. Good moves are rewarded with points; less good moves receive less points and...

Why Isn't Anyone Talking About The Jewish Factor? ------ zjVDZYu9MUeZ by Matt Nemmers
wrote in message ... Governor Howard Dean is married to a Jewish woman and their children are being brought up in the Jewish faith. This has little relevancy for domestic matters, but its impact of foreign relations cannot be ignored, especially in an age where our greatest foreign policy challenge is repairing relations with the...

Where are *annotated* PGN games? by Gandalfling
--- Where are *annotated* PGN games for young players? --- Help! I'm aware of Pitt archives, I've searched Chessopolis, Chessville, and The Week In Chess, but I cannot find annotated PGN games, well, to be more precise, annotated in simple fashion for young improving players like Irving Chernev's "Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played", or Weeramantry's "Best Lessons of a Chess Coach" or...

Fred Reinfeld's 1001 Checkmates - real positions? other sources? by Gregory Topov
Are the positions in Fred Reinfeld's "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate" based on real games or are they composed? The Checkmate Challenge at http://www.testyourchess.com has 288 checkmate problems based on real games by masters and others, and I'm wondering if something similar (i.e. based on real games) exists in book form or electronically (eg PGN or ChessBase format). -- Gregory Topov

Simultaneous Chess Displays by Simon
Hi all, It doesn't seem that many master/GM players give simultaneous exhibitions anymore. The only one I have heard of is the current IM Silman & IM Basman games on chessworld.net, but these are not contact exhibitions. Of course, I may be incorrect, and I would like to hear of any that have been held in recent years. Found some interesting snippets on google though, regarding the worst...

Which online service and why - playchess or icc by Jon Beckett
Hi all, I played a few games on playchess over the weekend and was very impressed indeed. Also, the fact that it seems so much cheaper than ICC was a factor. I've been thinking about joining an online chess thing for a while, and always presumed I would join ICC - until I found Playchess... What is the general opinion between the two - how do ICC and Playchess
