Timman-Karpov, Montreal 1979 (0-1) [Best Game of 1979] by Gregory Topov
Does anyone have any information or annotations on the following game? Timman - Karpov, Montreal 1979 (0-1) I have been able to find very little information about it, even though it makes for some spectacular chess. It's a fascinating game, as Karpov (black) first launches a knight sacrifice that Timman (white) can't afford to take, and then makes white's helpless king dance from one side of the...

Who said, "Tonight I'm playing against the black pieces." by Wilma
I read it somewhere and can't find it again. Somebody asked a master of yesteryear, I think it was, who he was playing that night. Whoever it was said, "Tonight I'm playing against black," or something like that. The point was that he played chess and not people. Wilma

Request for Long Games Match by MC
Hello: I'm looking for opponents interested in very slow time control matches (3-7 games). The ideal time control would be G/90 td/30; 40/2 SD/1 would be even better. Games can be scheduled once a week or every other week on ICC and/or FICS. The rating ranges I'm looking for a ICC: 1700 - 1850 (I'm 1706) FICS: 1600 - 1800 (I'm 1591) or, if you are USCF 1650 - 1900 (I'm USCF 1665)

Looking for Gitescu - Purevzhav, Varna, 1962 by Mr. Plow
At least that's the name and date from my reference, but my reference also quotes an illegal move. Can't find it on chesslab.

FENomeno by Alex Brunetti
FENomeno is a free service to display a chess position from a FEN or EPD string (generated by most chess programs) together with the creation of a short link, useful for example to post positions in a newsgroup. All you need to do is go (with your web browser) to e4e6.com? (with the question mark) and paste your string. Something like http://e4e6.com/?42 will be created and copied to your...

SCID - how to edit and save PGN files? by Jestrada
Question about SCID (I'm using ver. 3.5) - I'm a relatively new user and love it so far. My question relates to saving changes made using the comment editor. What works: If I open a PGN database, and edit or add some of the annotations using the comments editor, the changes show up fine in the PGN window. What doesn't work: When I choose the --Game menu, the options "Save: Replace Game" and...

Email address for Patrick Wolff? by Gregory Topov
Does anyone have an email address for Patrick Wolff? If so, could you please send it to me privately. I would like to correspond with him about some errors in the second edition of his (otherwise excellent) book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess." -- Gregory Topov --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I don't necessarily agree with everything I say." -...

Kramnik by Jerzy
Lately I have read an internet site www.moskva.ru with its great city guide. And I have learned that the word "Kremlin" probably comes from the word "Kremnik" a derivative from either the ancient Greek word "kremnos" which means "hard/strong" or from the Slavonic word "krem" which means simply "forest". So my question to the linguistic experts is : is it possible that the name Kramnik has sth in...

Comments on USCF? by NetSock
I recently decided to become a member of USCF. I signed up on-line about 2 weeks ago with a debit card. The $49.00 soft posted against my account the same day, and did a hard post the following day. The web site stated that a USCF ID number and pin would be sent to me via email...and I have never received it. I confirmed that I posted the proper email...which I did. I've sent two on-line...

A New Resource for Chess Historians by Jeremy Spinrad
The Austrian project to digitalize (terrible word, but seems to be what is used in the trade) newspapers is coming along well, and is available at http://anno.onb.ac.at/ Unfortunately, there is no word search available, so you have to know what you are looking for in advance. My best find to date was in The Humorist, 12/30/1843, where the paper notes after Staunton's victory that St Amant had...

Fischer's most brilliant game? by Gregory Topov
In some annotations of the 1956 Bryne-Fischer game, it says: "Known as `the game of the century' until a later Fischer brilliancy. 13-year-old Fischer defeats one of the strongest American players. And once again a great master of the game does it with a Queen sacrifice." What game is the "later Fischer brilliancy" that surpassed the Bryne-Fischer game? -- Gregory Topov

WHY I DON"T WANT TO MEET SAM SLOAN.. by michael adams
Why would anybody of my calibre wish to meet S. Sloan.? - In my world he offers nothing, while expecting much. His humour is strictly Woody Allenish, in my view, & I detest the Woody 'fun' view. Where & when do these f'ckers literally FOAD?..
