I've just started playing on FICS as a registered user and on ICC as a

$50?

Help-Mate programs - where to get ?! by
Claus van de Vlierd
Hello ,
a) sometimes I like (or better : try ..) to construct some
help-mate-problems --
unfortunately it is (being "human") sometimes awfully difficult to
prove that only
one solution exists ...
b) are there any help-mate-programs which could do such "proof-reading" ?!
and where can one get them ?!

K-12 Chess Championships: the future of chess? by
raylopez99
The future of chess: a game for toddlers.
You can find an article in today's on-line 12/19/2003 NY Times under
Travel Escapes section
At the National Scholastic K-12/Collegiate Chess Championships,
players who can barely tie their shoelaces are castling and double
pawning.

Has anybody gotten My Predecessors Volume 2 yet? by
Alberich
I ordered my copy of Kasparov's My Great Predecessors Part 2 more than 2
weeks ago after I read the order was "then being accepted" for order
placement. I've been getting updates from Barnes & Noble that the order
was "confirmed" but hasn't been shipped yet?! I don't know what's going
on with this but it should have been in the stores by now. Anybody know
what's going on with the delays?

Phildor vs. Lucena by
Jud McCranie
In actual games, which occurs more the Lucena position or Philidor's
position? More generally, in actual practice, is R+P vs. R more often
win or a draw?
Thanks in advance.

Fritz 8 - Chessmaster 9000 1/2-1/2 by
Marco
I managed to do it, running both programs on my Dell Inspiron
1100 with 2 GHz, 256 MB RAM. Neither program was running as
the main task. I left each program think one whole minute
(with infinite analysis) before forcing it to move. Here is
the game, it was a boring draw but it seems to the uninitiated
me that CM played a slightly better game. Fritz was less
drawish than CM towards the end.

Lev Khariton, unique person and writer. by
Aryeh Davidoff
In his previous postings at Google.com Goran Tomic more than once
called Lev Khariton the world's best chess journalist, the famous
chess journalist etc. I agree with Goran, but I think that Lev is more
than a journalist, or rather more than a chess journalist. He is an
exceptional man who has preserved in our difficult time the human
qualities that are not to be so easily found in this world. I...

Distributed Computing - BOINC and ChessBrain by
Ed Seid
For those with spare CPU cycles:
I've created two 'winboard' teams for BOINC and ChessBrain.
- BOINC is in beta-test, working with the SETI@home and AstroPulse projects.
- ChessBrain has been in development for some time now and will be
attempting to set an official Guiness World Record on January 30, 2004.
BOINC and ChessBrain work well when run together on a single machine.
ChessBrain uses...

etymology of patzer by
DDEckerslyke
found this version...
You know that 'Patzer' is a derogatory term that denotes a hopelessly weak
player. But do you know how the word patzer came about? The word Patzer is a
favourite in most International events. The story goes that the German
Grandmaster Jacques Mieses was giving a simultaneous exhibition in England
at the turn of the century. One of his opponents had a lone king left on...

Fischers best game by
NoKetch
I want to do some computer analysis of some Bobby Fischer games. I'm looking
for a few games that are considered his best, from 1st move to last move, not
games with just one or two brilliant moves. Any suggestions for any games that
qualify will be greatly appreciated.

Bobby Fischer chess wallet by
Ivan
I had ready that Regina Fischer used to sell chess wallets like the
one Bobby Fischer used to care around.
I found a website that sold chess wallets and they seem very
expensive. Even the travel sets are very expensive. If that is how
they are today, I wonder how many chess players could actually afford
one back in the 1950s and 1960s. Scroll down and look at all the
other prices on this...

CM 9000 endgame database files by
Jud McCranie
On the second disk of Chessmaster 9000, there are files such as
KRPKR_B.J00 and KRPKR_B.JIX. I assume that the first file is a
database of K+R+P vs. K+R positions and the second file is an index
for it. It is in some binary format. Does anyone know the format of
these files so I could write a program to extract the data?

If you have no experience in researching matters, or in writing proposals
(in brief not in a long winded or imcomplete manner) get some practice in,
or do your homework very carefully or your propsals will merely be
completely disgarded as too much time consuming (they will not be graded and
corrected for you, merely rejected.

Chess software for a child - need recomendation by
Jud McCranie
What is good software for a child to learn about chess? She is age 6
and knows the basic rules and can mate with K+R vs. R. She beats most
people in her age group.
The only one I've found specifically for this age group is Chess Mates
at http://www.chessmate.com/software.html#ChessMatesCD . Is it good?
Is there something better?
Thank you.

Daily chess calendar? by

Has anyone seen a daily chess calendar (along the lines of the
Page-a-Day brand) for 2004? I've heard of them, but I can't seem to
find any. Heck, I'd be happy to find *any* kind of chess calendar
(wall, desk, etc.).
Thank you,

Help, please! - Printing chess diagrams in Word under XP. by
Igor K
Happy Holidays,
Strange things have been happening when I tried to edit my Word files
(from NT and Win 98 pcs) with ChessBase / ChessBase light output on PC
that runs Windows XP.
1. When I open on XP file that was previously saved on non-XP PC, I
see no diagrams, just an empty space. I tried to change the font from
DiagramTTFritz to something else, then change it back - no luck!
