Chess Puzzles by
W T Harvey
Here are some puzzles taken from the chess games of strong players of
the early 20th century. Except where noted, it's "White to Move and
Win".

Another question about Fritz 8 by
Marco
When you play against Fritz 8 in "sparring" mode, does Fritz
play at its maximum strength apart from the mistakes it will
deliberately make once in a while?
Thanks,
Marco

Who was Manteufel? by
Jeremy Spinrad
Levy's biography of Staunton gives the following quote from the Chess Player's
Chronicle about Horwitz.
Educated in the very best modern school of Chess play - a contemporary and
compatriot of Manteufel, Mandheim, Bilguer, Bledow, Heydebrant, etc, he has
acquired a knowledge of the game but rarely met with.
Ignoring variations in spelling and name variants, I know all of these as top

Old Soviet books by
Roman M. Parparov
Hi,
A couple of years ago there was a post advertising a sale of old soviet
chess books for reasonable prices and shipping costs.
I wonder if that site was still available and I would be grateful
if someone would know that URL. Or if there is another one.
The books of main interest are opening monographs, game collections of
outstanding players and tournament books.

Annual USCF rating distribution report by
Dan Heisman
Hi!
Time again for my annual USCF Rating distrubution report, this year comparing non-scholastic percentiles
from 2003 to 2002. Data is from the 2002 and 2003 Annual Supplements. I know (Ken!) this is measuring
somewhat different populations and not 100% conclusive, but it is still a decent measure. The sample may be
biased because you could argue that stronger players are less likely to drop...

Stupid questions about a modified chess rules. by
FreddyFoobar
Suppose we take the chess rules and add a new one:
A1: You have the option of moving two pieces simultaneously,
as long as each move considered separately was legal in
'single move' chess. The two pieces can't land on the
same square, obviously.
So you can't move a pawn, then the bishop behind it
which was previously blocked by the moved pawn. Or,
