Modern Chess Openings by
Marco
Are "Modern Chess Openings" and "Batsford's Modern Chess Openings"
two editions of the same book? Nick de Firmian seems to be author
of both and the length is approximately the same, but I'm not sure
if they really are the same.
Which one (or which book in general) would you recommend as an
opening reference to a player who is halfway between beginner and
club level?
Thanks,
Marco

Lev Khariton: Was Kasparov's 3rd game against Fritz a masterpiece? by
Aryeh Davidoff
Aryeh Davidoff: In his 200 Words column at pakchess.com Lev Khariton
asserts that Kasparov's 3rd game against Fritz was a far cry from
top-level chess. Besides, Kasparov was simply following in Tigran
Petrosian's footsteps!
In his recent interview to the newspaper "Kommercant" Kasparov poses
an obviously rhetoric question:
"Was it a bad game?". Understandably, he means his 3rd game...

Rule changes for the modern era by
Patrick Cairpre
When only mechanical clocks were available it made sense to require a
player to stop the clocks and claim victory if the opponent
overstepped the time control.
Modern digital clocks can be programmed to stop when time runs out in
sudden death. This should be done. It is no longer necessary to
require anyone to watch the clock. We dont expect olympic runners, or
race car drivers, to turn their...

International momentum gathers. ACP vs Fide by
Phil Innes
In an article published today at http://www.chessville.com, specifically
http://www.chessville.com/misc/Interviews/Lautier.htm
Joel Lautier answers half a dozen questions and extols the Grandmaster
organisation ACP, versus the 'intolerable inertia of Fide."
It is much reported in ths USA that GMs do not care to have a voice in world
chess, and their problems are of their own making, GM Lautier...

Expectations for Ratings Improvement? by
James Hagan
I have been playing for a number of years and my chess rating has steadily
improved over that time to where I'm now a 1200-1300 rated player. I would
have expected my rating to make a couple of jumps along the way, but instead
my rating seems to have risen in a steady, linear fashion. Are my
expectations out of touch with reality? What's the best way to make a
"jump" in my playing ability? ...

and it was unclear.
Thanks,

Cleveland Library Chess Exhibit Opens by
PJDBAD
In the January 2004 Chess Life, the opening of a chess exhibit is discussed.
It contains some serious misinformation. I quote:
The earliest items displayed are chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300
B.C.
No credible chess historian that I know of believes that chess was played
earlier than about the seventh century C.E. I was surprised to see this claim
in print except that the article...
