Kasparov in the Flesh
I have not written on Kasparov for a long while. I felt I was getting sick
and tired of this topic. He has become too much of a tabloid hero. However,
quite recently I came upon his interview at www.kasparov.ru Once again I
realized that stupidity and self-conceit have no limit. Here are some of

It would be nice if sites such as this one were actually used to
explore and debate questions of chess history, literature and, of
course, the games themselves. It would be nice, but that is not the
way they are used. Instead we have invective and smear until the

Searching for Photo of Smyslov playing Korchnoi by
samsloan
Just about two weeks ago there was a photo posted prominently on a
chess website showing a young Korchnoi playing a young Smyslov in
Moscow in about 1951.
I just went back to look for the picture and I cannot find it.
Can anybody please tell me where it is?

Legal Threats from Polgar and Truong by
samsloan
Polgar and Truong constantly make threats to sue people. That is their
MO.
For example, in January 2004, the USCF VP of Finance reported
receiving a threat from Polgar and Truong to sue him. That resulted in
a long thread on rec.games.chess.politics entitled "Legal Threats from
Polgar and Truong".
In addition, the Chairman of the USCF Finance Committee reported

Pandolfini Panned by

Of course draughts is older, so Bruce has made a mistake even on the
cover!
The funniest mistake that Winter points out is this one, Pandolfini on

USSR beat Yugoslavia and yes, that's in a year 2007! by
OlimpBase
Now hang on, we hear you say, the two nation states have long ceased to
exist? But this week organisers in Moscow rolled back the clock and staged a
match in the tradition of the famous friends-and-rivals encounters of the
1950s-80s. The teams consisted of veteran players who had taken part in the
matches during the heyday of the Soviet era. (...)

Is GM Peter Szekely really dead? by
Offramp
GM Peter Szekely is supposed to have died in 2003, at the age of about
48.
But did he? Here is a quote:
"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the
blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights, for lordship.
Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down
from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Wodin game them, which
their Berserkers...

Great Statistics from MIke Nolan by
samsloan
Mike Nolan has developed some very interesting statistics concerning
the geographical distribution of adult and junior members in the USCF.
What surprises me is that Mike Nolan wasted that effort by sending
them to the one group who will make no use of those statistics. I am
wondering why Mike does not post them here.
To summarize just a few of the findings, the junior member statistics
show...
