A chess story (fiction) by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
My name is George, I used to be a single father. My two kids joined a
school trip so I in turn was free to join Andy and John in John's mini
to a weekend Swiss, my first tournament. All four of us studied at the
same department, and the three of us were frequenting a local chess
club. The fourth traveler was Cindy herself, the cutest girl ever. Why
she volunteered to assist us with chores (what...

Drug Testing Poll by

REPLY TO FIDE APOLOGIST TIM REDMAN
By Larry Parr
Tim, if I may. I presume to address you directly, since I ended up
in the second person in your message below.
Concerning the drug question questionnaire being distributed to the
top 100 American players, I have little doubt that it will end up reading as a

chess computer shopping - a few things to consider by
Chris Kantack
For those of you interested in handheld chess computers, here's a quick
summary of things to consider. Note: I have no expertise with the
PocketPC platform. My handheld chess experience is pretty much limited to
the Palm, Gameboy platform, and Excalibur products:
My handheld web site can be found at:

Now for some quick info that may...

More about FIDE's drug testing program by
Tim Hanke
Frank,
Actually I've followed this issue pretty carefully for years, and I'm
finally fed up, and out of patience, and beyond the reach of "reasonable
arguments."
Kelleher and Tanner say they have tried to "soften" the drug-testing regime,
and they boast about their relative success. But the fact remains, the
drug-testing program grinds on, with more and more pressure to test more and
more...

Team Chess Tournaments listings by
Isidor Gunsberg
Does anybody have a listing of Team Chess Tournaments that take place
in the USA? I'm not interested in scholastic Team events for kids, but
those events that allow adults to participate. Of course, I am awareof
the regional US Amateur Team Championship (held in 4 regions) that is
coming up in February. However, are there any other Team Chess events
that are Open to all players?
Any information...

Active and Defensive Piece Values by
Hauke Reddmann
Assuming P=1,B=N=3,R=K=4.5,Q=9 as a "general" value
(which differ from teacher to teacher - I inserted
an approximate power for the king but trying to
exchange him isn't recommended :-)
- how would you rate the pieces in attack and defense?
E.g. a Q tied to defense wins no beauty contest.

Salmon vs Owen Birmingham 1858 by
Jeremy Spinrad
Salmon played 2 games which I feel are very nice in crushing Szabo in the
Birmingham 1858 tournament. He then apparently lost 2-0 to Owen, but where are
the games? I would like to see them; they are not in the Oxford book.

Chess for Pocket PC by
Alan O'Brien
I have a Pocket PC and I am currently using a free chess program called
ChessGenius 1.43 by Lang Software. It's free, and it's extrememly good.
I am thinking of buying Pocket Fritz 2. Does anyone know roughly how much
memory it uses up?
What other programs are posters to this NG using?
I'd also be interested in sites that have chessbooks in MS Reader format.
TIA!
Alan

Robert Huebner on Kasparov's: My Great Presecessors by
C Pfrommer
In German chess magazine SCHACH (11 and 12/2003), GM Robert Huebner from
Germany has written a very detailed review about Garry Kasparov's book
(My Great Predecessors, Part I). In fact, I have never seen before such
a detailed review and criticism (about 25 pages long). Thus, it is
impossible for me to give here a full picture of his comments and analysis.
Summing up, Huebner verdict is: the...

Chess drinking game?? by
Seth
First off I'm not joking.
I have a few friends of varying degrees of chess ability. Its tough to
get them to WANT to play chess, mostly because they dont want to get
wacked off the board. The weaker friends won't hear of taking material
odds, but they all like to drink. I figure that if I could introduce
beer or shots of whatever into the rules of the game it would make it
more attractive to the...
