ICA journalism...not so cutting edge by The Masked Bishop
It's worth noting that the much-ballyhooed ICA Chess Bulletin, which is so often pointed to as the reason for Illinois having one of the highest state chess association dues in the country, did not bother reporting at all on the interesting Kasparov vs. 2084 player fracas in his July simul in Chicago. The leading feature article on this event, just out in the most...

Do you think they'll ever digitize Lev Alburt's puzzle book? It's such a great training tool. I'd love to have it for a game boy or PDA. -- Kate Taylor Clatskanie Chess Club http://clatskaniechessclub.tripod.com Snickerdoodles http://www.kathrynrosetaylor.com

One for the Chess Lawyers (please!) by GSV Three Minds in a Can
UK league game, with a final position: 4k3/8/2N1P1P1/2K2p1p/p7/6b1/P7/8 black to move Both sides were short of time (White had ~5 minutes, Black had even less) .. however black noticed that white hadn't pushed his clock correctly, sat there until white's flag fell, and claimed a win (without, as it happens, making a move at all). It was a team game, but White's team were not sure whether they...

Making a Move - Do You Have a Ritual? by DDEckerslyke
Joined a club, played my first game last night as bottom board for the bottom team against a 10 year old kid. He wasn't very good and I was soon a piece up for nothing (but absolutely not being complacent). I had knights on c5 and c6. He played b4 attacking the knight on c5. I thought for 3 or 4 minutes then picked up the wrong knight and played Ne5 instead of Ne4. Oops. As it happened he didn't...

Are Chess Videos Worth It? by Vic Martinez
Are Chess Instructional videos any good? I would think not, as many books have the same general info, and even a 2 Hour video wouldn't have as much valuable info as a good book anyway. Have I answered my own question here? The only advantage of a video lesson, I think would be, of course, is to actually see the lesson played out. Thoughts? Vic.

Rubinstein in *My Great Predecessors* by Alan O'Brien
I have always really liked Rubinstein's games; he was after all a brilliant player. What came as a shock was how highly Kasparov rates him in MGP (I). Apparently Rubinstein is the most major influence on all modern chess! I had never really thought about him being that important. By the way, why 'Akiba' and not the more normal first name 'Akiva'? Are there many Akibas? Alan

Dear chess friends, A player has asked me to correct the notation of a move when two pieces can move to the same square, but only one of these two moves is legal. Please see the following sample: 7k/8/8/8/2b1N3/3N4/4K3/8 w - - 0 1 In this case when the white knight on e4 moves to c5, I would
