Is it the same Bowdler? by
Jeremy Spinrad
Is the Bowdler who played many games against Philidor the same person who gave
rise to the word bowdlerize (I believe because he printed a cleaned up version of
Shakespeare?). Some sites seem to indicate this, but I wanted to see if anyone
know for certain.

Aryeh Davidoff
Aryeh Davidoff: Here is Lev Khariton's comment at 200 Words:
Sub-par books by authors like Gufeld?!
In his www.chesscafe.com column "Checkpoint" (Batsford Blasts Back)
Carsten Hansen comments on the ups and downs of Batsford noting that

Buying a chess set from Russia? by
Marco
Is it possible to buy a chess set from Russia through
the internet or by mail? I imagine they would cost much
less than those for sale in western Europe.
Thanks,
Marco

How to record best moves in FEN code. by
Alberich
Hi. I've finally mastered the ability to write FEN code for chess
positions. They're relatively simple to do...but now I'm trying to
understand how to write down the best variations in FEN code. How do you
do this? Here's an example:
1kr1r3/1b1pn2p/pq2p1p1/4Pp2/Pp3P2/3B2P1/NPP1Q2P/1K1RR3 w - - 0 21
Now, I can setup the board using the above FEN line...but I can't figure
out how to actaully...

Middle East by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
Several participants of rgcm truly impress me
as experts or at least advanced amateurs on
the situation in the Middle East. And I understand
that when you know something well then you'd
like to share your knowledge with others, that
it is very tempting.
Thus despite the fact that it is not a chess topic,
please have your discussion under the above
neutral title instead of falling into a primitive

Basic Chess Endings revised by Benko by
Ed Gaillard
I went to a bookstore today and saw that they had copies of a new
edition of _Basic Chess Endings_, revised by Pal Benko and converted
to algebraic notation. I hadn't known it was in the works. Has
anyone looked at it in depth or know of any reviews of it?
Basic Chess Endings was the book I learned by endgames from, many
years ago, and while I own and like the new _Fundamental Chess
Endings_,...

New York chess cafes? by
Mark Finn
Does anyone know of cafes, bars, etc. in New York City (not
necessarily just Manhattan), where you can play a friendly "social"
game of chess - while having a coffee or a light meal? I don't mean
the pay-by-the-hour places such as those near Washington Square, but a
place that has a few chess tables (and possibly some reasonable
competition)?
It's getting cool outside now, so that's why I'm...

Idea: Playing positions in textbooks against the computer - Comments requested by
Ingo K?hne
Hello dear chess community,
I came across the idea to set up positions I find in chess books into
my Fritz 7 and then play it at long time controls against the
computer. I would set the program to a strong level for this purpose
and would play only as many moves until I see I somehow lost the
thread in the position. Then I would go back to the initial position
and try again. I figured that by...

Fritz & Chesster. How to crack it? by
Spain-Europe

Chesster (Fritz und Fertig in German or El Pequeno Fritz in Spanish)

German: PLEASE USE ORIGINAL CD OF FRITZ AND FERTIG !!!
Sh....! I can't find any crack for this programme. My child cries for
playing. Any suggestions??

The "swap rule" in chess... by
Edward D. Collins
I'd be interested in hearing some discussion on what type of an impact "the
swap rule" would have in chess.
To those who are not aware of what the "swap rule" is, let me explain.
Many board games offer a big advantage to the player going first. I've become
a big fan of both hex and Twixt, two abstract strategy connection-type games.
(Both of these games can be played at a turn-based site...
