Botvinnik vs Smyslov the 50's by
Etj718
Looking for the results between these players during the 1950's only.It is my
contention that Smyslov was the strongest player of the decade despite
Botvinnik being the World Champ throughout most of the decade.I believe Smyslov
outscored Botvinnik(+1) in the 3 World Championship matches. What were the other
results between the 2 during this decade?

Ckamaras
Hi All,
I have a question about the Mephisto Exclusive with the Senator module.
Does this machine have hash tables?
Classic Chess and games says so in it's literature.
Mr Eric Hallsworth /who's opinion I greatly respect/does not!
So anyone out there that has the machine let me know would you?
it suppose to be the Milano Pro program which does not have hash.
If it does have hash, wouldn't that make...

The joy of a Christmas purchase from the USCF by
Seth
What happened to me when I tried to spend some money with the USCF:
About a month ago I ordered a chess clock and a chess set for the
blind (one with raised squares and pieces that you can differentiate
by touch ). About 2 weeks later I got a box that contained the blind
chess board, 2 bags of pieces, and a pack of cards (something like a
"Chess adventure card game"...). I looked at the packing...

Got Excalibur Chess Station for Christmas by
jonbeckett_nospam_73
Hi all,
Among the various things I got from my wife and family (including a
digereedoo!?) was an "Excalibur Chess Station" chess computer. I thought
I would drop a few lines with what I think of it so far. It's worth
pointing out that I am pretty much a beginner when it comes to playing
chess.
What do you get?

Spassky - unusual manoevre by
Alan O'Brien
I had almost forgotten what a great player Spassky was in his heyday. I tend
to associate him entirely with Fischer. But he won Tim Krabbé's Most Amazing
Move competition!
Also he came up with the following knight manoevre in the Sicilian -
something which Lev Polugaevsky said he has seen neither before or since. It
really is very clever!

Game analysis by software by
Kirk McElhearn
Can someone explain to this relative beginner what chess software does
when it analyzes games? I assume it looks at moves and suggests what its
engine finds as better moves, but is that all?
Is this a useful way of going over games one has played? Or does one
have to be a fairly strong player to benefit from it?
Thanks,
Kirk

Question about Polgar books by
Kirk McElhearn
I have the Polgar book of chess puzzles (5334 positions), which I find
very good, especially for me as a beginner. Does anyone know the two
other books in this series: one is on middle games and the other on
endgames. Are they puzzle books, or are they different?
Thanks,
Kirk

Promotion and Touch Move by
DDEckerslyke
How does the touch move rule work with a promotion? You move your pawn to
the eighth and pick up a Queen but then you realise that would be stalemate
so you go for a Rook and you say you were just moving the Queen out of the
way to get to the Rook behind it. Do you have to declare what piece you are
going to have? Can you change your mind at any time up until you place the
piece on the square?...

looking for a stonewall dutch game by
King Leopold
In my NIC 2003 #8 issue
On page 61 Alexander Shabalov mentions a game between Shirov and Ivanchuk
in a 27 move stonewall dutch from the 30th Chess Olympiad in Manila.
Anyone know where I can find that game?
Thanks in advance,
Leopold

J Polgar gets highest place ever for her by
Wilma
The January 2004 FIDE ratings show Judit Polgar played 6 games, increased 6
points, and is now the 8th ranked player in the world.
The top three are still Kasparov, Kramnic, and Anand.
U.S. Champion Shabba is well down the list in the top 100.

An example of horrific tactical vision by
ohfreak
Just finished this game and I thought I'd share it as a pretty good
example of a player struggling mightily with tactics (among other
things).
I'm working my way slowly through 1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate and
the 1001 Combinations book by Reinfeld as well as Chernev's Logical
Chess and Practical Chess Endings. Hopefully some of this will rub off
eventually!
Any comments welcome!!

modified chess rules. by
Theo
Here is a different idea to add some spice to chess. I call it
Simultaneous Chess. The idea is probably not new, however I must admit
I haven't heard of it being formulated before.
"Each player must write his/her proposed move in secret. Once this is
accomplished by each player, the moves are revealed and performed
simultaneously."
Obviously this will require some refinement of rules such as...

A note for beginners by
Alan O'Brien
If you want to be good at chess then you are gonna have to learn how to play
the Sicilian both as black and white. Don't go in for that crappy Closed
Sicilian rubbish; you have to grab your testicles or vulvas in both hands
and play proper Open Sicilians.
It's a lot of work but it has to be done. The earlier you start to learn the
lines the better you'll be as a chess player.
Best wishes for the...

Nalimov's endgame data files by
Jud McCranie
The files for Nalimov's endgame tablebases are available at
http://www.uib.no/people/pfvaf/chesslib/Nalimov.htm but I don't know
how to extract the data. What is the format of the data (or where can
I find it) so that I can write a program to extract the data?

Would anyone with chessbase analyse this game? by
Dr. David Kirkby
I played a game as white in which I made a real mess of things. The
PGN file can be found at
http://www.g8wrb.org/chess/paupau.pgn
I've analysed the game using the free open-source chess engine
'crafty'. The results of the analysis can be found at:
