"Looking for Trouble" Excerpt, Errata by Dan Heisman
Hi! This month's Novice Nook (http://www.chesscafe.com/heisman/heisman.htm) is an excerpt from my new book Looking for Trouble, a book about identifying and reacting to threats in chess. There are 3 problems, one each from the opening, middlegame, and endgame sections. Also, I am compiling an errata list for the 220+ problems: O4: There should be a Knight at b1 and not a Queen at d1. O48:...

69 move draw in Karpov v Polgar in Rnd 4 by Wilma
This woman is going to put me into intensive care with these games. The endgame, entered deliberately by Polgar, where Karpov had a bishop and two pawns against Polgar's opp colored bishop and K went forever with IM's disagreeing and then GMs disagreeing. ~whew~ Polgar still a full point lead in the Essent tourney. Fianchetto opening? by dragmio
I often find myself playing against white who opens with fianchettoeing his bishops first. What is the best response to that, and what's that opening called anyway? Thanks in advance, dragmio

GK's Comments in My Great Predecessors by Bob Lablaw
In many of the reviews I'd read before I bought Garry Kasparov's My Great Predecessors, people mentioned that Kasparov had very few comments to make about the games, judging from the scarcity of his initials after parenthetical comments. Although I'm sure much of the analysis is by his team, as has been pointed out, but as far as I can see, he only adds his initials when he inserts something into...

ot..Dresden Teapots by michael adams
Gentlemen, Recently read here a post about Dresden, & now the thread appears to have vanished of the face of the board (googling isn't an option for me at the mo.) Anyway, I'd just like to thank Briarroot for his contribution on, for me at least, this endlessly fascinating subject.. -Mick

Eight cups of coffee watching Judit beat Sokolov by Wilma
I'm a nervous wreck. Who would think a Ruy would still hold such games after all its time on the planet? She's winning, she's not winning, she's losing, it's unclear, she's winning -- she won! What a game! This was Round 3 in the Essent tourney. She leads the tourney by a full point. Wilma

My 60 Memorables Games vs. My Great Predecessors by Aryeh Davidoff
I'd like to quote Alan O'Brien's posting from Bulletin Board at www.chesscafe.com: "The book (My Great Predecessors) also has one major advantage over my Faber paperback of Fischer's My 60 Memorable Games: it folds flat" Great, Mr.O'Brien! You've hit the nail on the head! And most likely, folding flat is Kasparov's book only advantage! Aryeh Davidoff

In the Land of the Free, We Fight "Terrorism" by Jerome Bibuld
Dear Relatives, Friends and Associates in the World of Chess: Heil Dubya! When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mrs. Wilson, who used to tell us how wonderful it was to live in the United States. her favorite reason was that, while people had to carry identification at all times in other countries, we could walk the streets with no identification at all and, as long as we...

Just two questions.. by Tom
I was thinking of joining the USCF for fun and a rating to work with. I'm located in Phoenix, and according to the research I did online, it seems that every rated event is cash-prize tourny that would require me to cough up 15 or 20 bucks. The USCF membership fee is understandable, but is it going to cost me a fortune to get my rating up? Secondly, I have exausted every problem on the...

Team Chess - Special? by Kathryn Rose Taylor
I'm planning a scholastic team chess event. We've never held a tournament like this before, although we have participated in them. Other than the standard rules for chess & team chess... do you have any recommendations to make sure things run smoothly? Any particular things to watch out for from a tournament director's perspective? Thanks in advance! Kate Taylor
