Winners and Losers in the Sherzer Case by Sam Sloan
One thing for sure, Alex Sherzer now knows who his friends really are. For example, John Fernandez, who has repeatedly proclaimed himself to be a friend of Sherzer, is difinately not his friend. Fernandez was the first to blast the news of Sherzer's arrest all over the internet and has been proclaiming since day-1 that Sherzer was guilty. So, Fernandez is definitely one on the losing end of the...

In the Land of the Free, We Fight "Terrorists" by Jerome Bibuld
Heil Dubya! In two days, I shall go to court. This is the final appeal I shall make on this bbs for help in meeting an attorney who might take the case on a pro-bono basis. When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mrs. Wilson, who used to tell us how wonderful it was to live in the United States. Her favorite reason was that, while people had to carry identification at all times in...

Eade's Libel Charge vs. Sloan by Parrthenon
EADE'S LIBEL CHARGE: GOSPEL TRUTH OR BIG LIE? By Larry Parr Some readers have been following the Eade-Sloan libel brouhaha. Jim Eade claims that Sam Sloan libelled him in Chess Life in a candidate's statement. Moreover, Mr. Eade has often repeated this charge, referring to Mr. Sloan as "Scammie" and using other language that is either nasty hyperbole or accurate description.

Lion endgame study by Daniel VanArsdale
The Lion is a "fairy" chess piece that appeared sometime after Anthony Dickins introduced the "Grasshopper" in 1912. I have not been able to find who first published a Lion composition. Both were based on the Cannon, a Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) piece that first appeared in the ninth century. The Lion (L) moves on the lines a Queen moves, except that it must first vault over a piece of either color...

Sherzer testifies in his own trial. by Isidor Gunsberg
(Bruce Draney) wrote in message ... I am fairly surprised that Sherzer and his attornies would agree to allow him to testify in his own defense. Once he answers questions he gives up his 5th Amendment rights of self incrimination and must answer any and all prosecution questions under oath. Perhaps his attorney...

Has a master-level game ended in check...checkmate by Eponymous
I saw a movie recently where two guys were playing chess. White checked Black and Black responded to the check with checkmate. I thought this would be highly improbable in a master level game but thought I'd ask. I assume the checkmate would have to be a discovered check of a trapped King. Any knowledge of such a game?

R. Fine & The 1948 World Champ. Tourn. by GreyHipster
Many years ago, I read somewhere that one of the reasons Fine declined to take part in the '48 tournament was that he lost a training match to Herman Steiner. Is this true? Were the games ever published? Are the games available? Thanks in advance..!! warm regards, GreyHipster p.s. I remember how nearly everone, including me, hated Fine's book on the Fischer/Spassky match. Now it seems to...

rona petrosyan and fischer by chiffres
August BCM says "Rona Petrosyan, widow of world champion Tigran, died recently. She was highly instrumental, as a Muscovite, in fostering her husband's career when he came as a raw youth to the capital. She also moved heaven and earth to get the two-volume Pergamon book of his collected games published. The story of her slapping the face of Suetin, blaming him for Petrosyan's loss to Fischer, is...

Lev Khariton:Kasparov-Schwarzenegger, Bizarre Friendship by Aryeh Davidoff
"Regular visitors to our site will know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is interested in chess – a few months ago we had an article on his involvement in the game. But did you know that "Arnie" is a good buddy of Garry Kasparov?" This is what we can read at www.chessbase.com Good food for thought! Especially if you remember that during the Second World War Schwarzenegger's father was a...

Chess is taking over prime time television! by Chris Kantack
Well not exactly! (Thought that the subject line would get you to look at my posting though;) But I have seen quite a bit of chess on TV lately. Last Sunday's Canadian drama "Wind At My Back" had quite a bit of chess in its major plot for that episode. Wind At My Back has a running storyline and has had chess in multiple episodes and (I'd guess) will contiue to feature chess from time...

chess master versus chess amateur by DDEckerslyke
This is a truly excellent book if a bit demoralising as Euwe spends about 30 pages in a forensic analysis of why you are crap. 'Logical Chess' is rightly hailed as a classic but this book, which is aimed at players at about a similar level, imo is even better. The introduction is a revelation as Euwe seems to have been watching you as you play your best games and points out what you are doing...

What to do if your opponent erroneously deducts 5 minutes off of a Digital clock? by Isidor Gunsberg
I just played a game where I showed up a couple of minutes late. My opponent was using a Digital Clock, set for the appropriate default Time Delay. However, he also had deducted 5 minutes from each clock, apparently based on the erroneous assumption that such a deduction was mandatory. I talked to the Tournament Director, and he had made no announcement that instructed players to make this time...
