Shainswit-Woliston, New York 1940 by
Miriling
In the October 2003 issue of Chess Life (pages 26-29), John S. Hilbert and IM
John Donaldson write about Philip Reinhold Geffe, better known as Philip
Woliston, who competed in the 1940 U.S. Championship in New York.
The authors write that "Woliston did not fare well against the bevy of
international stars that appeared in New York . . ." They do not report how he
finished in the tournament, but...

Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave by

Heil Dubya!
Poor "Briarroot" is appallingly ignorant. Will someone please point out to
her/him/it documentation concerning Dresden, Hiroshima and Nagasaki (all within
a few months in 1945)? I think (s)he/it will believe what is printed in the
United Statesian propaganda organs (such as The New York Times). As for the U.
S. invasion of Korea, begun on 25 June 1950, (almost immediately after...

Membership special / auto renew by
Don Mihokovich
I just signed up for this at www.shopuschess.org. I think it was a
very good move for the USCF to bring this back, as it saves me time
and money, and hopefully generates revenues for the USCF, as well as
saving it the effort of reminding me to renew, etc....

Q. about rating systems by
Javier Fuentes
Hi.
I am in the middle of a discussion with one of the IECC (International
E-mail Chess Club) directors and he is telling me that their rating
system favors one color over the other one.
For example:
White's rating: 1586
Black's rating: 2131

Anand takes Ponomariov's place by
Alex
Since Ponomariov is acting like a 13 year old brat and is too scared
to play Kasparov, I think FIDE should replace him with either Vishy
Anand or Bobby Fischer.
Either of these players would make an interesting match against
Kasparov.

Tim Hanke's Cultural Prejudice by

So Nick, when are you going to tell us where you're from?
In the thread, "A new enemy of Lev Khariton" (9 July 2003), Briarroot wrote
to me: "Now this I readily admit to. You deserve to be insulted, roundly
and repeatedly. I consider it my duty to expose you..."

question on pawn promotion by
Tom E.
Just for the sake of asking, if you have a dark squared
bishop on the board, and you promote a pawn at a
dark square, is it legal to obtain a bishop?
Thanks,

Bobby Fischer robbed of 31 empty moving boxes by
Peter van der Hoog

The thief of the empty boxes, Mr. Janos Rigo, is according to Bobby Fischer,
also a con-artist:
... At this stage Mr. Rigo's car magically reappeared (with my luggage and
the clock and shuffler intact) .. Why did it take him to weeks to find out
or figure out that his car was not stolen but only towed away by the city? I
don't buy it.

Fund raising suggestions? by
TR
Greetings!
My son's high school chess club is embarking on a fundraising effort.
They'd like to raise funds to support travel to and entry fees for
tournaments, as well as to buy some equipment.
One arm of the effort is going to be direct appeals to local
businesses. I have two related questions. Answers based on experience
are preferred, but logical deductions and rank speculation are...

Business Idea – Feedback wanted by
Gus Evian
Hello,
I've been a few months ago in the Village Chess Shop in NY. It's a
small chess shop (40 square meters) with an excellent selection of
chess sets. In the shop are 10 to 15 chess boards for immediate
playing with everyone: you have just to look, if somebody is sitting
alone at a board and then you can simply join him/her. It's very
similar to the Internet Chess Servers as FICS, ICC, Yahoo,...

Can a chess player fake it ? by
jonnywildboar
British television channel 4 are making a chess based edition of the
popular show 'faking it' this is where for instance, a straight laced
city lawyer tried to 'fake' being a hardcore rapper with 2 weeks
intensive coaching, he was then placed in a emimem style 'rap-off' in
which he did very well !!
so, the chess 'faking it' team has plucked a novice player (say 1400)
and started intensivley...

Talking LCD Chess computer: $9.95 by
Chris Kantack
Once again Talking LCD chess is being sold for the ridiculously low
price of $9.95. The last time this happened (to the best of my knowledge)
was around Memorial Day weekend (last May). This is the best buy I have
ever seen in a chess computer.
