Sherzer Trial by Paul Truong
Dear Ben: Alex made a poor judgment. There was no doubt about it. Regardless how the trial goes, his reputation has been damaged. However, as long as I have known him since the junior days, he has been one of the nicest person in chess. He has a long list of friends who will testify on his behalf starting tomorrow. Some of these names have a lot of credibility in the chess world. I am not...

Mensa in Texas by Isidor Gunsberg
(RSHaas) wrote in message ... Mensa operates 10 chapters in Texas. The one covering Houston has 1100+ members and would receive from Mensa HQ just under $10,000 per year. Hmmm, I wonder how many of those Mensa members in Houston work for NASA? It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to figure out that Texas has more lunk heads per...

The Bobby Fischer interviews: are they legitimate sources of information? by Michael Sayers
Greetings, In regard to the so-called Bobby Fischer interviews, which were broadcast over the Phillipines radio, it is worth pointing out how tenuous the connection between information on the internet with reality can be, of which I find this to be a rather severe example. I have yet to find corroboration that it is in fact the voice of Bobby Fischer we are hearing. In addition, there has been...

Quality Fact Checkers at the Mobile Register by Isidor Gunsberg
Hmmm, and I thought that Russia, alone, had over 200 Grandmasters. On the other hand, the reporter, Joe Danborn, seems to be relying on the U.S. Chess Federation to privide them with accurate info... ________________________________________________________________________________ http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1063876524196260.xml Sherzer is one of about 200 chess...

Did Morphy Lose Matches, and de Riviere's Brother by Jeremy Spinrad
I had always believed that Morphy never lost a match, and beat some players even at remarkable odds. However, I ran across a couple of articles which cast doubt on this, and I wonder if someone could clear them up. In the New York Times, Feb 28, 1863, an article says de Riviere beat Morphy 3 of 5 games in a friendly match. I didn't really put too much stock in this, because I had read that...

Lev Khariton: Double Standards Doubled? by Aryeh Davidoff
Double Standards Doubled? By Lev Khariton Today almost everyone knows about "double standards". This expression has definitely a negative ring whether applied to the strategic policies of the world's governments or the views expressed by individuals. However, time and again we notice that nothing seems to remain frozen and even double standards tend to expand, that is they double,...

Latest report from Mobile Register by Paul Truong
I have known Alex for a long time. I would be the first to tell him what he did was not smart. In fact, I did. However, as he told me when I visited him, many facts cannot be told by him until after the trial. He is not able to defend himself in this forum. Therefore, he asks for everyone to hold their judgment until we know the facts and not as newspapers have reported. His life and his...

Should Alex Sherzer go to jail? by Kenneth C.
Assuming that the prosecution is right, that Alex traveled to Mobile with the intent of having sex with the 15 year old girl, does he deserve to go to prison? After all, he never actually met the girl. Who knows, he may have changed his mind at the last moment. It doesn't quite seem right to me that the mere planing of a crime should be met with such severe punishment. Of course if the encounter...

Suggestions for a travel case? by Buddy
I recently bought a couple of chess sets for the school. They were all inclusive - triple weighted pieces, board and bag with pockets for pieces and a clock. The board and pieces are decent but the cases have turned out to be a disappointment. They are pretty cheaply put together and the zipper broke on one of them after 2 weeks. I have been all over the net trying to find a decent travel case...
