At one time, the USCF had a deal for temporary memberships that
allowed you to play in a tournament. Is this still around?

Kasparov's commentary in today's Wall Street Journal by

A thought-provoking analysis by Kasparov. I especially like his
quotation from President Reagan.

Paul Truong - Background Interview by
Richard Van Riper
Susan Polger has published a very good interview with Paul Truong that
describes his remarkable life including his struggles to reach the United
States. If the USCF needs a "survivor" and someone who is a self-made man
with a track record of successes, Paul's their man. He should bring fresh
leadership, lots of energy and many creative ideas to his new USCF position
of Marketing and P.R....

getting the most out of chess computers by

Does anyone know of a book, a course, or a teacher who can give pointers on
getting the most out of chess computers? Seems like I'm under-utilizing the
GM on my desktop.

TOUGH problem by
Tom E.
Try Tactics # 102 on ICC. It took me about 50 take-backs.
It wasn't even fun. Anyone who can visualize this mate is a
genious of the highest order. (it isn't one of those pansy 5
move mates either). I assume these puzzels on ICC are
checked over for the fastest mate, but I have my suspicions
on this one.

World Open Lithograph from 1978 on eBay by
Liam Too
Angelo,
I emailed you about the Norman Rockwell plates and up to now you
haven't responded.
What are you, announcing things here in RGCP but not man enough to
honor your words?
I wonder if you knew that John Fernandez' ebay auction was real.

myself.
By the way, Friday Rapids is dwindling. Leif Pressman said they

Chess Puzzles - September 15th Column by

Here are some puzzles taken from the chess games of strong players of
the early 20th century. Except where noted, it's "White to Move and

Goran Tomic: Kasparov vs.Capablanca?! by
Aryeh Davidoff
Kasparov vs. Capablanca by Goran Tomic
"Why did Kasparov talk about Capablanca with some underestimation?"
When you read about the best chess players in history, you could be
perplexed by Kasparov's evaluation of Capablanca. He said in the
interview conducted by Hannon Russell:

Why do some people play 1. d4 or 1.c4 ??? by
tiger
d4 can lead you to the blackmar-diemer and this is certainly fun and
probably more tactical than e4 will ever be ! And yes , maybe at
grandmaster level this opening is not a good idea but since I never
play grandmasters I don't care !!!

Searching for Bobby Fischer by
Sam Sloan
Searching for Bobby Fischer
I just replayed the movie "Searching for Booby Fischer" on video. Of
course, I had seen the movie before, but this time I saw a few things
I had not seen previously.
I think that we as chess players can learn a lot from this movie. It
is a masterpiece in the way that it takes a subject most people would
find to be deadly boring and turns it into an exciting drama....

Lev Khariton: Open Letter to www.worldchessrating.ru on Kasparov's Personality Cult by
tomic
Last week I sent my open letter to the editors of www.worldchessrating.ru
as regards the abnormal situation: the bloated personality cult of Garry
Kasparov. The readers will understand everything from this letter that I
translated for them from Russian into English. What they will not understand
is that so far I have not received any reply from the editors, Kasparov’s
friends and colleagues. No...

How much do chess books actually cost??? by
Ivan
I went to my local Barnes and Nobles bookstore and found that the new
kasparov book (My Great Predecessors VOL. 1) cost $35.00 on the cover.
So I decided to search the Internet to find better prices.
I then went to chesscafe.com and found it selling for 33.95 .
I visited Amazon and found the book selling at $24.50 . Finally I
went chessusa.com and found the same book selling for 29.75 .
Now all...

USCF officers please read by
Angelo DePalma
The problem with Games Parlor is it has zero impact on USCF membership and
does nothing for USCF's profile because every player there is already a
member. True? The numbers (that I've seen) are too low, so there's no way to
make up for the fact that people only go there to play games (or maybe only
chess), and that they are USCF members already. I'm not sure about the
financial side, but I'd...

In the Land of the Free, We Fight "Terrorists" by
Jerome Bibuld
Dear Relatives, Friends and Associates in the World of Chess:
Heil Dubya!
When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mrs. Wilson, who used to tell
us how wonderful it was to live in the United States. Her favorite reason was
that, while people had to carry identification at all times in other countries,
we could walk the streets with no identification at all and, as long as we...
