searchable newspaper archives? by
richard kennedy
Chess historians are pointed to http://eagle.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/
where issues of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, from 1841 to 1902, are online and
searchable.
Does anyone know of other newspaper archives that are equally old and searchable?

Tournament to play Morphy? by
Jeremy Spinrad
The New York Times on March 31 1859 is yet another story of Morphy's exploits,
including his win over Mongredien. However, it also gives an interesting twist;
that to choose from the 100 players who want to play Morphy, they would be
divided into groups of 20 to select 5 challengers for Morphy. Does anyone know
whether this competition to challenge Morphy actually took place, and if so...

Ken Whyld has died by
David H Li
We certainly thank Sam Sloan for his post concerning Ken Whyld's passing
on 11 July 2003, at age 77. In his post, Sam Sloan mentions that his 1984
article was "slammed" by Whyld. While I also did not have the pleasure of
meeting Whyld in person, I did have several indirect dealings with him as
well as a letter from him. When I was doing research on the Genealogy of
Chess, back in 1997, Whyld,...

K factor?? by
DDEckerslyke
I'd like to have a go at working out the ratings of British GM Luke McShane
who has afaics played a lot of games recently and seems to be performing
very well. Anyway I Goooooogled for an online ratings calculator but then I
came up against K factor. Can anyone here explain K factor to me and what
values I should enter for a game between two GMs or a GM and an IM?

who is Hoffman and who is Jenny Shahade's publicist? by
Flobby Bischer
Who wrote the article for smithsonian? Does Jenny have a publicist? The
whole article
smells like a big publicity campaign for her -- trying to get some corporate
sponsorship?
Just a couple questions from Flobby "Lets get the big money into chess"

St Louis 1860 and other missing tournaments (and matches) by
Jeremy Spinrad
I have been doing some little researches on chess in the period 1836-1863 and
I have come up with references to a number of events for which I do not know
results. Perhaps someone can help. Most recently, I have come up with some
references in the NY Times to the St Louis Chess Congress of 1860; one writer
says that this was greater than New York 1857 which was really a local tournament
in which...

why do GMs charge so much by
Ivan
I don't understand why GMs charge so much for lessons. It's not like
the average person can afford $60 an hour. I guess they are still
communist and think about making as money as possible at one time. If
they were capitalist, they would lower their rate to $40/hr and make
more money. For example, getting paid $40/hr for 10 hours is much
better than working $60/hr for 5 hours. Plus they...

200 Words
by Lev Khariton
August 1st, 2003
I love chess history, but I think that right now we have to discuss
something far more important things than the parentage (that is, who his
father was) of Bobby Fischer. With September 18 looming on the horizon, the
beginning of the Ponomariov – Kasparov match in Yalta, I would like to ask
the chess world some questions. Chess history is being made...

As black what should I be thinking here ? I'm clearly in a bit of
trouble, but am I sunk ? What should my priorities and strategy be at
this point ? Fritz (6) likes Rf8 at depth 14. Agree ? Thanks.

Gary to Play Again! - "Machine vs. Man: Checkmate" by
Marian Cascaval
I don't get it.
Why have been decided to play with Fritz since it has been outranked
by Shredder 7.04 (in SSDF list) and it seems it will be outranked by
Junior 8 too?
Even if the Morsch team intend to come up with Fritz 9 or something
the Chess Base team would not know how the program will perform
compared to others.

My shopping experience with ChessBase USA by
R+V Nugter
I would like to pass on the following shopping experience I had with
ChessBase USA, with this group.
I originally ordered Fritz 7 from ChessBase USA 27 June 2003. This was
because they advertised (and to this day, still do) that this product was on
sale for $25 US, as you can see:
http://chessbaseusa.sectorlink.org/DesktopDefault.aspx
After comparing the features with Fritz 8, I determined...
