Flag Falls During Mating by
Neil Coward
I played a game where I delivered mate just as my opponent said "your flag
has fallen"
In fact he might have got his sentence out a nano second before, it was hard
to tell.
I thought maybe he had a case but the controller awarded the game to me.
My opponent, to his credit, accepted this without any complaint. He seemed
to take the view that chess was just a bit of fun and nothing to get all...

European Championship in Istanbul by
KRCH
If I were Ali Nihat Yazici, I would never again be involved in organising a
tournament after this
You made a lot of money and he will be very active in the future.
He is not interesting in Demands of this stupid GM's- he did not
expect that they can calculate his profit...

*SPOILER* Asymmetric Symmetry by
Noam D. Elkies
In article ,
Bill Smythe wrote:
Can anybody come up with a vertically symmetric chess position in which,
with best play by both sides, the second player to move wins?
"Vertically symmetric" means that, for example, if there is a white knight
on f3, then there is a black knight on f6.

2003 World Open Statistics by
Ivan
That was a really strong open section this past week. There were over
35 GMs playing. I think there was a 10 way tie for first place so
each person wins almost $3000.
What is interesting is that the GMs that got 11th - 20th place will
only get $80 since they have to pay their entry fee.
I am sure Goicherg is very happy with this turnout. I somehow feel
this format is not really as good as it...

I played him some Bullet games on ICC (...well maybe not the ideal measure
of

Well, at any rate they measure handspeed, and mouse skill, and yes,
connection speed.
I once played someone whose connection was so fast that he gained a *decisive*
advantage while we ripped off a dozen book moves. It almost appeared that he
was...

Any World Open Skittles Room Stories by
BriMarErn
Thanks to Sam, Dan, and anyone else reporting on the World Open! Wish I was
there.
When growing up on the east coast and attending this event, some of the
funniest stories I've seen and heard have always occured in the skittles room.
I remember this one guy who spoke no english (looked like he was from the
Phillipines) giving all comers 5-3 on the clock and SMOKIN' EM!!
Did anything interesting...

Looking for Morphy games in Pandolfini's Solitaire Chess column by
J Hall
Do any of you chess players know which issues of Chess Life
magazine contain a Morphy game in the Pandolfini Solitaire Chess
column? I saw one a few years back ('98?) and was wondering which
issue that was or if there are others that I do not know about.
Thanks.

National Leaders Who Play Chess by
Nick
Which modern national leaders (presidents, prime ministers, or other heads of
state) are known to play chess?
Bridge is a more social (and devious) game than chess, so it might well be more
popular among politicians. China's Deng Xiaopeng was an keen bridge-player,
and one of his favourite partners was Nie Weiping, the great weiqi (go) player.
Fidel Casto is one chess-player; Kim Campbell, a...

pawn attacks by uncastled side against castled? by

Charles Blair wrote:
Many books show disasters befalling uncastled kings. A few

A well-known example is Dubois vs Steinitz, with a very similar
variation given as Knorre vs Chigorin. A probably more obscure
example is Liburski vs...

tournament play after Fischer lost to Spassky in 18 moves in there first

'Real' chess - the Best chess variant? by
dragmio
This is from the www.chessvariants.com:
"'Real chess' is one of those games in the family that predates Fischer's
proposal by more than half a century.
This game was invented by E. I. Csaszar in 1934. (...)
The game starts with only the pawns on their respective opening squares.
(...)
Players put a piece on their baseline one by one: white places a piece, then
black
places a piece. (...)

Why do some people play 1. d4 or 1.c4 ??? by
LeModernCaveman
You failed to address the key point that Spassky *accurately* calculated
the
variations after Bxh2?, while Bobby did not.
Getting a paltry two pawns for a Bishop is still a blunder, even if made by
a
non-beginner! To believe that Fischer is incapable of blundering simply
because he is not a beginner, is a clear sign of idolatry, even if you cannot
see it, yourself -- a submerged...
