replace Ponomariov with Shirov? by
Bill Brock
Based on Shirov's form in the past few years, this might be as
competitive a match as Kasparov-Short was, but (just as in that
match), the games would have high entertainment value. I think it's
likely that Shirov would rise to the occasion, get over his Kasparov
complex, and play a competitive match.
Note the rough justice of the above proposal. Bonus: no short draws!
More to the point: I'd...

Niro's Back !!! by

I just received a report that Frank Niro is back in the USCF office in

What does anybody think about this?
As long as we are beating dead horses, we were led to believe
that Niro was working for nothing when he was interim ED. Was he in

Self-Published Games Collections by
Neil Sullivan
There was a recent posting on the chesstalk.com bulletin board on this
subject. I would be interested to know if anyone was aware of self-published
games collections from non-masters.
Who has done it?
How did they prepare their games, i.e. format, etc.?
How did they go about printing their work?
Also, has anyone seen any of these that are particularly well done?

Dump Ponomariov !! by
Angelo DePalma
Unfortunately, by the time these events are held the players and their
qualifications may have lost some relevance. Kramnik has hardly played, and
turned in a rather lackluster performance this past month. Kasparov has lost
to Karpov and drawn a computer after wimping out. Pono won a crap shoot
known as the FIDE championship. Leko may very well be the strongest among
them.
Any of these clowns...

Orwell or Botvinnik?- 200 Words by Lev Khariton by

Orwell or Botvinnik?
200 Words by Lev Khariton
It is no secret that today we are living with a host (I would say a myriad)
of myths that we ourselves have built up over the years.
For example, George Orwell, doubtless an outstanding writer and in no less
degree a visionary, in his iconoclastic utopia “84” predicted the break-up
of the Soviet Empire. He is being remembered now, the year of his...

I do have some ads on my websiite and I get a small amount of money

more than anybody else I know gets.
Suppose the USCF sold a $15 book through...

There was a 48 hour extension agreed to. Kasparov's giving a press

However, FIDE statutes are clear - Ivanchuk would be the replacement.
However, it's pretty clear everyone's going to make an effort to have this
match happen (except Ponomariov the whiny Ukranian brat)....

Majestic CHess by
superbird20000
Hey guys have you checked out the multiplayer portion on the demo for
Majestic Chess? It is pretty awesome. I really like the 3D
chessboards and I can't wait to challenge against the 24 different
personalities. Seems like a pretty comparable game to Chessmaster,
what do you guys think?

Gambit book: How to use Computers for chess by
Leo
Hi Christian,
quick question: Why is the book so expensive in Europe ?
I'm interested to buy it but the official price in Europe is EURO
23.45 which is about $26.30 ! (calculated with the current exchange
rate 1 EURO = $1.12)
Price at amazon.com is $16,07.
To be honest: I won't pay $26.30 for a book which I could get 40%
cheaper in the US ... for $16 I would buy it immediately but

USCF Fires 17 staff members, but no big deal
I was shocked to read that on August 20 the USCF fired 17 members of
its staff, but on closer look it might not be that big a deal.
In my postings last month entitled "Problems with Frank Niro" I
predicted that Chess Life Editor Peter Kurzdorfer would be fired and
my prediction has proven correct.
Peter Kurzdorfer never came into the office. He...
