USCF Members by Sex and Age by
samsloan
Mike Nolan has posted extremely interesting data about USCF Members by
sex and age. Thank you Mike Nolan.
USCF members by sex shows what many chess teachers have observed,
which is that among elementary school children, the girls are nearly
as interested in chess as the boys, but as the girls grow older they
lose interest quickly and almost all of them stop playing.
USCF members by age shows...

Polgar Life magazine by
Sam Sloan
Polgar Life magazine
I am deeply disappointed in the current issue of Polgar Life magazine.
Other than the picture of Susan Polgar kicking a football on the
cover, there are only five pictures of Polgar inside the magazine and
only 13 pages of the magazine are devoted to Polgar (not counting the
letter to the editor, which is also about Polgar).
Polgar is our only chess player we have and I...

CUI BONO?
J. D. Walker speculates on the nature of our Fake
Sam Sloan. A more useful question is the ancient
query, "Cui bono?"
The answer here is clear: the political Old Buard
in the USCF is the beneficiary. The effect of the scurrilous
postings, along with the endless sexual junk from
Finance Committee guyo Bill Brock, was to drive people

Harry Payne on Texas Tech University by
samsloan
Harry Payne of Oklahoma, who has close connections with Texas Tech
University, had this to say today on the USCF Forums:
I know there is a college in Texas getting tried of hearing all this
bad publicity. Some major contributers are also concerned. I think the
USCF should do its own promoting. The P/T combine doesn't seem to be
doing too good.

Meeting Link Under-the-Table Dealing Questions by
samsloan
No. It is not. Members have to be allowed to ask questions, even
embarrassing questions, on this forum.
It is an accepted fact by everybody, with no disagreement, that two
million dollars of USCF membership money has gone missing since 1999.
I know nothing about the Meeting Link money or the financial situation
of the 2007 US Open, but I do know that these sort of problems have
come up every...

Confidential BINFOS by
samsloan
If another board member sends a BINFO marked "Confidential" and I
reply to it quoting some of his words, I am obliged to mark it
confidential too.
On the other hand, I feel that the only "Confidential" BINFOS should
be those dealing with litigation and personnel matters. Therefore,
when it was reported that Susan Polgar wanted to move the Polgar Girls
Tournament to Texas Tech University and...

Bill Brock cites the United Mine Workers by

Bill Brock wrote on the New York Times website at at

:
- Irony aside, given that Mr. Truong & Ms. Polgar ran a reformist
campaign ("clean up the USCF"), isn't the timing a bit suspicious?
You'd think this was a Teamsters or UMW election-I'm originally from
the anthracite region, so Jock Yablonski...

Bill Hall Lies All the Time by
samsloan
Nobody is allowed to use the l-word on the USCF Issues Forum so I will
clue everybody in here.
I have had extensive dealings with Bill Hall and I must tell you that
Bill Hall Lies All the Time.
Another frequent liar (although not nearly as frequent as Bill Hall)
is Bill Goichberg.

Is this checkmate known? by
Andrew Usher
This is a common trap in the Guioco Pianissimo opening - I have used
it successfully; of course the first version I used was much longer,
but this is the essential. I give it if black falls victim; white can
also, of course, given that the symmetry of the board.
The first 5 moves are the symmetrical Giuoco Pianissimo. Then 6 B-KN5
O-O? 7 N-Q5 B-K3? - black should have done P-KR3, driving back...

Capablanca vs Janokowsky St Petersburg 1914
Very nice game. Capa has a very clean game. Doubled pawn on e file?
Interesting. SO doubled pawns is not always a bad thing?

HOT NEWS: Gregory Alexander has been logging in as Bill Goichberg for
at least one month
This has come out in the debates now taking place on the USCF Issues
Forum. Gregory Alexander has been behaving strangely all along, for
example screaming shrilly when Brian Mottershead went into his newly
created account after Gregory had complained about some problems with
that account of which Brian...

Computer Science Experts: Chess 'harder' than Go by
raylopez99
In an article in Science, 14 September 2007 p. 1519, written by the
Chinook team that weakly solved the game of checkers (draughts), it's
asserted essentially that chess is harder than Go.
What is meant is that the "decision complexity" of chess (and
checkers) is higher than for Go (actually Go-Moku was mentioned, which
is not exactly the same as Go, but I take it the analogy holds for
Go),...
