The Crazy World Of Chess by
parrthenon@cs.com
GM LARRY EVANS' NEXT BOOK....
"The Crazy World Of Chess" (296 pages) will be published this August.
It can be pre-ordered from Amazon for $9.95.
I have just seen the proofs and the book is a humdinger.
The final chapter pays tribute to the late Arnold Denker, who had a
low opinion of chess politicians. An excerpt:

Charles A. Buck - article at Chess Cafe by
zdrakec
Thank you, Dr. Spinrad, for a fascinating article. You mention a story
involving a lawyer, a piece of candy, and an off-hand remark by
Morphy. I have never heard this story - would you mind providing some
details?

How the Mottershead Report became public by
samsloan
by Brian Mottershead on Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:16 am #76279
What Sam Sloan says is basically correct. I was asked by Bill Hall to
prepare a report for him and the EB. I did, and I put it up password-
protected on my private web site and sent the seven board members plus
Hall usernames and passwords so they could access it. I also gave
usernames and passwords to Brian Lafferty, who asked for a copy...

Polgar Wars: Polgar Group Declares Victory by
samsloan
I find it amazing when those who are a queen down in the endgame claim
that they are winning when the rest of the world can see that they are
losing.
Remember, during the Invasion of Iraq there was this official Iraq
government spokesman dubbed by the press as "Baghdad Bob" who daily
showed up for his TV interview in which he would claim that the
American forces were being decimated, driven...

Chess960 world championship resolved by use of a blitz tiebreaker match. Possible idea here? by
Rich Hutnik
Ok, in the ongoing idea suggesting new ideas for multiple reasons, I
am wondering about this one. I read in Games Magazine that the
Chess960 world championship was decided with a final game of Blitz
Chess960.
On that note, I am curious what people's thoughts would be if you were
to have regular chess have a final tiebreaker game be a blitz chess
match, rather than the world champion retain the...

Ron Suarez responds to Gregory Alexander's Rants and Raves by
samsloan
Ron Suarez has posted a very good discussion of what has been going on
over at the USCF Forums for the past few weeks. I am reposting it here
to preserve it, as it will likely be deleted from the Forums soon.
Gregory Alexander has already responded with the same sort of rants
and raves:

chess software looks so Win95 by
Up2Late
Why does chess software seem to look so Windows 95? (CT-ART, Chess
Mentor, etc.)
Seems to me they would sell a lot more if they made the interface look/
function better.

Unwritten Orders by

THE HAPPY TALK COMMANDMENT
Do you have any evidence that Bill Goichberg told the editor not to

statement by the editor, or something in writing. No? I thought not.

Eric Moskow and the Reshevsky Memorial by
samsloan
Eric Moskow gives money to tournaments so that he can play in those
tournaments.
His FIDE rating is 2254, so he knows that he will not be invited to an
All-Grandmaster tournament unless he sponsors it.
Earlier this year, he played in the Gausdal GM-A in Gausdal, Norway, a
tournament in which the LOWEST Rated player other than himself was
Grandmaster Lajos Portisch, rated 2512.

Were the rise in popularity of chess and backgammon in the 1970s linked somehow? by
Rich Hutnik
During the 1970s, chess and backgammon went through a near
simultaneous boost in popularity. I am curious if popularity might be
somehow connected between the two, like perhaps the Fischer-Spassky
chess match ended up rubbing off on backgammon in some way. Then,
after the 1970s, both went into decline.
Anyone see if there is a connection between the two?

Susan's Claims that her Family has been threatened by
samsloan
As far as I know, nobody other than Gregory Alexander believes that
the anti-Immigrant posts in Susan's blogspot were real. If they were
real, why were they not posted here, on my Yahoo group or on rgcp?
Similarly, Susan has repeatedly claimed that she and her children were
threatened with harm. If this is true, why did not she go to the
police? If she went to the police, what was the...

Guy Macon's suggested changes to USCF/FIDE rules
There have been many suggested changes to he rules for chess,
none of which has gathered any real support. Here are my
suggestions, which I expect to receive an equally warm reception.

ONE: Have the USCF adopt sections 1 through 5 of the FIDE
laws of chess and abandon the present USCF rules that cover
the same areas. Having two sets of...
