Rules question about "completing a turn" by
chipschap@gmail.com
In a tournament game recently, in a tense endgame, my opponent made a
move (picked up a piece, moved it to another square, and released the
piece). He then didn't press the clock button. I didn't even notice
that latter omission; I thought for a while and then made a move,
whereupon he said rather sharply, "You can't move yet. My turn isn't
over. I didn't press the clock yet." Um.... OK .......

November 3-4, 2007 USCF Executive Board Meeting by
samsloan
That was because nothing got done. The major issues facing the board
and the federation were ignored, with the board acting like the
proverbial ostrich who, when faced with danger, sticks his head in the
sand.

Joel Channing's Retirement World by

Since when? Remember that it was I, not Donna, who first raised this
issue. I brought it up at my first meeting of the board after I had
been elected, which was on August 14, 2006. At every one of the five
meetings I attended as a member of the board, I raised this issue. I
was always promised copies of the documents pertaining to the pension/
profit sharing plan but I never received even one...

Copyrights... by
J.D. Walker
Greetings Friends,
I am a complete novice when it comes to copyright law. I would like to
learn more. I chose a particular example to try and begin to understand.
J.R. Capablanca's "Chess Fundamentals" was originally copyrighted in
1921. I see that several revisions of it have been copyrighted since
then. Is it true that all US works before 1923 are now public domain?
What is the...

Hilarious Rube Goldberg contraption uses chess set by
Taylor Kingston
In hopes of providing the group with some much-need comic relief, I
submit the following link:

Look for a self-moving chess set about halfway through.

GetClub vs. Jester games faked? by
help bot
After weeks, probably months, of reading about how GetClub's
success against the Jester program, I finally went to the Web
site again (I did not like the graphic chess board before) and
played a couple of games.
This site (ludochess.com) claims that Jester is the world's
strongest Jave chess program, so it seems ludicrous that the
games Sanny has presented here are a fair representation of
its...

Last 2 days I found players were easily beating the GetClub Chess as
there were 2 bugs in the game. Those Bugs has been removed. So it will

Eastern Mind vs. Western Mind: Go vs. Chess by
Josef Pieper
I have been researching the question of habits of mind and culture
as being promoted by and/or reflected by certain board games. In
particular, I have been investigating whether weiqi/go is representative
of the “Asian mind” and whether international chess is representative of
the “Western mind.”
Apparently, I am not alone in raising this question. Analysts in
political and...

Desert Island Chess by
Chess One
This conversation started in a monitored newsgroup: Basically, you are on a
desert island for a month with a bunch of other chess players and you can
take along
"4 books: one opening, one tactic, one endgame and one misc"
What do you chose?

Most Scholars and Mostly-men: the case against Edward Winter by
help bot
Larry Parr was recently caught retailing a lie regarding what he
termed "most scholars" endorsing a bogus claim by his mentor
GM Larry Evans, that he and he alone was clever enough and a
strong enough chess player to spot deeply hidden "clues" which
he says amounted to "proof" of the throwing of games. These
"clues", we were told, were deeply embedded in the moves of
the games themselves.

Board to Hold Next Meeting on the Internet by
samsloan
The USCF Executive Board has decided to hold the February 2008 meeting
online over the Internet. There is no way that the general membership
will be able to participate. This was because Paul Truong refused to
go to California and Bill Goichberg refused to hold the board meeting
anywhere other than California, where he lives during the Winter
months. I am wondering if it is a violation of the...

drug testing, why I can't play chess by
parrthenon@cs.com
THIS CRAZY WORLD OF CHESS by GM Larry Evans (page 82)
Just Testing
Two players had their scores erased at the 2004 World Team
Championship in Calvia because they refused to comply with a "random"
drug test demanded by FIDE. Yet many people wonder why there is any
need to enforce Olympic restrictions now that both the International
Olympic...

Truong Can't Enter California by

Why? Does anyone know what his problem is? He made it clear at the USCF EB
meeting that he can't enter CA, but refused to say why.
This is not entirely true. A state will often refuse to pay the
charges to extradite a person from another state. Let us say that you
commit a crime in Hawaii and are arrested in Florida. Florida...
