Is Bill Hall really out sick again or just a lazy bum who doesn't want to work? by samsloan
Is Bill Hall really out sick again or just a lazy bum who doesn't want to work? Turns out that ever since I filed my lawsuit, Bill Hall has been out sick. It seems that every time something important is going on, Bill Hall suddenly gets the flu or something. Remember when we were trying to finalize the plans for the US

Any comments on using a backgammon doubling cube for chess? by Rich Hutnik
This idea deals with the draw issues with chess, and adds another element that would be interested to people watching chess who normally don't play. This game will have you doubling when you think you can win, and challenge you to go for a win, even if challenged, because you get more points. For chess: 1. Players play to an agreed number of points, or a set number of games (the player with the...

Texas Tech Student Paper Covers Sloan Action by parrthenon@cs.com
HOW LONG IS LONG? "Polgar said she believes Sloan's lawsuit does have merit and did not want to make further comment." Oh, come on -- this is a college newspaper. They obviously made a mistake. I'm 100% certain that Susan believes that Sloan's lawsuit does NOT have merit. As one of the defendents - and as one who has read his suit and been sued unsuccessfully by Sloan before -- I expect the...

How about borrowing from progressive chess for handicapping of players? by Rich Hutnik
Rather than the idea of removing pieces as balancing, how about the following levels of handicapping (greater handicap): * First, have the weaker player choose white or black. * Allow the weaker player a chance to score points on a draw, but the stronger player doesn't. * Allow the weaker player to play white, and get two non-capture moves to start before their opponent gets a move. * Three...

Chess pages that show chess moves and not notation by Terry Terry
One reason I really never studied chess was because the notation was too messy. I would like to find some chess sites that use pictures instead of notation to show some basic chess. Can anyone recommend one? Also, I saw a book in the past that showed common mating positions. Most of them were to a castled king position. Anyone know of such a

THE ART OF TROLLING: Winding up the net by Guy Macon
THE ART OF TROLLING: Winding up the net INTRODUCTION The object of this post is to bring together a definitive document to cover the phenomena of the Usenet Troll. To many a troll is nothing more than an annoying method of defeating the killfile whereas to the heavily killfiled, trolling can be a virtual Godsend. What I want this document to focus on is how to create entertaining

A Typically Misleading Statement by Gregory Alexander by samsloan
A typically false and misleading statement by Gregory Alexander. He makes it sound like he used to play 20 years ago and has been organizing for 20 years. In reality, Gregory joined the USCF for the first time in his life only recently, and played in the first USCF games in his life on 8-12-07, less than two months go. It was a three game affair. Gregory has never directed a USCF rated chess...

Typesetting chess books by tOmmetje
Wow, this is something completely different from all the other forum posts here. When you read a chess book, do you prefer small (like A5) or bigger (more towards A4) pages, do you prefer one-column text or two-column text. And, in case of a two-column layout, do you prefer the textmoves (the real game moves) to be typeset as this: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4

Rob Mitchell exposed as a Big Time Con Artist by samsloan
Take a look at http://gothicchess.blogspot.com/ It makes it clear that Rob Mitchell is a big time con artist: "Wire us $30,000 and we'll be there They called Thursday night. Mike spoke up. No hello, no pleasantries exchanged. Just this: "So far all of our costs and research for this has set us back as least $30,000 of that $35,000 we had budgetted for.

Bill Goichberg and his 17,000 postcards by samsloan
Too bad Bill Goichberg did not think about this when he mailed 17,000 postcards attacking me or when he posted numerous attack pieces to the USCF Issues Forum. Why is it that Bill only becomes concerned about such matters when evidence is developed implicating candidates that he supported for a time? Sam Sloan

How to Kill a Forum USCF Style by parrthenon@cs.com
WELCOME BACK TO THE THIRD GRADE The new USCF rules amount to protecting the politicians from direct criticism. Take Sam Sloan's outing of board member Robert Tanner, who arranged fake tournaments to raise his rating. Under the new rules, members could not say that "EB member Robert Tanner is a cheater" or that "Robert
