Susan Polgar working in a "cheap bordello" thread by samsloan
I think this is a good time to revisit this issue. Back in 2004, when Susan Polgar was trying to form her "Dream Team" by excluding certain players she did not want playing on the US Woman's Chess Olympiad team, Anjelina Belakovskaia, former US Woman's Champion, stated that Polgar's screaming was like "girls in a bordello fighting over a client". This was in post number 9922 on the FIDE Chess...

Rybka vs. Hiarcs by help bot
One of the top challengers to the top-rated engine, Rybka, is Hiarcs. So I go to the Web site for Hiarcs and a set of positions pops up, which are supposed to show how great this program is relative to the competition: http://www.hiarcs.com/Games/H10pos.htm The very first problem position is from a game between GMs Tal and Uhlman, Moscow 1971. (If you recall, this was a time when the former

"half-truths, unsupported rumors and paranoid fantasies" by samsloan
It is interesting that John Hillary considers the financial figures sent by Bill Hall to the Executive Board and to the Finance Committee to be "half-truths, unsupported rumors and paranoid fantasies". I will use that quote in the future. Please note that John Hillary, a political ally of Jerry Hanken, states that the financial figures provided by USCF Executive Director Bill Hall are...

mephisto lyon by Mike Murray
Anybody know what a Mephisto Lyon stand-alone chess computer might go for these days? A friend of mine (no, not me, thank God) paid mega-bucks for one in the early 1990s and hasn't used it for some time. He says it's in excellent condition. I told him it probably isn't worth too much, what with Fritz-10, etc., going for about forty bucks but he thinks it might be of value as an electronic...

Question for Evans [Larry Parr] by Ian Burton
Would Evans recall the entry fee for the Manhattan CC Rapid tournaments (ten seconds per move) in the 1950s? Although he played in the Marshall Rapids frequently, he did on occasion play in the Manhattan Rapids. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It would resolve a dispute several old-timers are having. -- Ian Burton

Interview with Nigel Short by parrthenon@cs.com
NIGEL SHORT AGREES WITH LARRY EVANS "As to chess politics: it is well known that I supported the Right Move campaign of Bessel Kok in the last FIDE Presidential election. I have come to the conclusion that FIDE is unreformable in its current state and that corruption and incompetence are deeply entrenched. Due to the manner with which this election was won, with cash-stuffed envelopes being...

How a USCF By-Laws Change Gets Pased by samsloan
To get a motion on the floor simply write it out and hand it to the secretary. It will be taken up last in the meeting. Or, you can do what happened last year which is somebody first got it passed at the membership meeting before I had arrived. This is how a by-laws change got passed last year requiring me to spend 100 words in my candidates statement explaining my child custody case. The maker...

US Woman's Championship by Chess One
Does anyone know who has actually signed up for the woman's championship? Can they say where they get their information, so I can cite it, and add any other pertinent information that would be of interest to the chess public. USCF are apparently organising it, but have been silent for 3 months of asking. I even received an inquiry asking where to send a contribution to the brilliancy prize,...

The real problem is not micro-management by samsloan
The real problem is not micro-management. The problem is that the Executive Board ultimately has only one power, and that it to hire and fire the executive director. As long as the executive director feels that he is in no danger of being fired, he can do anything he wants. The board is powerless to do anything about it. I will give you one example: At the board meeting in Stillwater OK on

Desperately Seeking Susan by samsloan
"Susan and Paul have resisted the temptation to name names"? That has to be the biggest joke ever. Everything they write on their blog involves a personal attack on somebody, or usually several people, by name. As to your other point, Yes, it is widely believed that if they are defeated in this election, they plan to go out and form their own organization. Let them go ahead and try. Competition...
