I believe that Chess Life newspaper started in about 1947.

Before that there were USCF Annual Books published in 1945 and 1946. I
still have those in San Ftancisco.

According to historian John Hilbert, Chess Life began in 1946. The
first editor was Montgomery Major, who held the job through 1957.
("Shady Side," p. 474)

Chess Life was founded in 1946, according to my cursory Web search.

Later, I believe in the 1960s, it was combined with Al Horowitz's
Chess Review. The resulting publication was called Chess Life &
Review: when I joined USCF in 1973, that was the publication's name.

Still later, though I don't remember when, Chess Life & Review was
renamed Chess Life.
