Default Candidates for USCF Executive Board

According to USCF Secretary Don Schultz, pending verification of the
petitions and unless there was a last minute filing, it appears
that there will be 9 candidates for the 4 vacancies on the USCF
Executive Board that are up for election in 2005.

In alphabetical order they a

Randy Bauer
Joel Channing
Bill Goichberg
George John
Steve Schutt
Greg Shahade
Elizabeth Shaughnessey
Sam Sloan
Robert Tanner

The order on the ballot will be determined by a random drawing, which has
not yet been scheduled. The date for counting the ballots has not yet
been set. (The Bylaws require the EB set that date by January 15th.)

The ballots will be in the June 2005 issue of Chess Life. Eligible voting
members are those USCF members on June 30, 2005 who are 16 or older
as of June 30, 2005 and who reside in the United States. USCF members who
are eligible to vote but do not receive Chess Life as a membership benefit
must request a ballot by mailing a request for a ballot, including their
date of birth and a self-addressed stamped envelope, to the USCF office
by June 15th, 2005.

I know Sam Sloan and Randy Bauer don't like the Mensa model for chess so I
hope they lose.
We won't have a really good chess federation until we have one that is
structured somewhat along Mensa lines. Once we have a Mensa type chess
federation, we'll have the world's best, one like no other.
You all make think otherwise but none of you have a better idea. In fact,
most of you have no ideas.

I am glad to realize that your comment was a joke.

Greg Shahade will make an excellent board member and I strongly
support his candidacy.

So I'm gonna take a wild and somewhat disinterested guess ("wild"
because I know almost zip about USCF politics, other than some things I
have read on rgcp; "somewhat disinterested" because I haven't played
OTB chess or been a USCF member for over a decade, and I don't know any
of these guys personally) and say that Randy Bauer, Bill Goichberg and
Greg Shahade will probably get 3 of the spots, based on experience and
popularity/exposure. I have no guess as to who might get spot #4 in my
scenario, as I really don't know enough about the other candidates.
But I would guess that the combination of Bauer (general
finiancial/business expertise, experienced player), Goichberg (the US's
most successful tournament organizer) and Shahade (experienced NY area
player and, along with John Fernandez, doing some innovative chess
promotion in the form of the NY Masters) might be a pretty good one for
the future of US chess.

If I could pick a dream slate Sam Sloan would get the 4th spot, because
IMO every political entity needs a gadfly to keep it on its toes. But
I suspect there are some who would disagree with me here.

Any predictions from more savvy USCF watchers?

He is also known as Stephen Shutt from PA. Steve was the top vote
getter in the 2001 Executive Board election and is currently the USCF's
Vice-President. For many years Steve has been the coach of one of the
most successful High School chess teams in the US of all time.

I first met Steve at the 1998 National High School Championship in Los
Angeles. His team placed first, the one I helped coach (Bellaire HS in
Houston) came in 5th. My introduction to Steve was showing him my
scouting report which I made scraping Web pre-registration data into
Access, and using a mixture of SQL and VBA code to rank teams based on
their top 4 boards as well as overall strength. Not altogether
surprising was the fact that this ranking closely followed the actual
results, so Steve was very interested in seeing what I had when I saw
him again at the 1999 NHS in Sioux Falls.

SFAIK, Steve has done a good job on the Board. He has certainly been a
major contributor and supporter of scholastic chess, particularly
excellence in scholastic chess. I am very glad to learn that he is
running again, and wish him the best in his bid for reelection.
Best regards,

George John

Please note:

The "Bad Guys" slate consists of:

George John
Steve Shutt
Elizabeth Shaughnessy
Randy Bauer

The "Good Guys" slate consists of:

Bill Goichberg
Greg Shahade
Joel Channing
Robert Tanner

Sadly, Steve Shutt was once a Good Guy but he went bad.
