Default U.S. Junior and Cadet Championships

Mr. Haas takes the group to task for the lack of new controversies
for him to salivate over. How about this: once again this year, as has
been the case several times in recent years, the U.S. Junior and Cadet
Championships were held as "stealth" events.

There was no web coverage of these tournaments that I have been able
to find. No games have been published. Coverage was announced for ICC
but did not materialize, as far as I can determine. There is a press
release about Daniel Fernandez winning the U.S. Junior - but it is
hidden on an inside page of the USCF web site. There is no announcement
about the Cadet winner. Oh yes, many of the strongest players qualified
for these events were not able to participate because SCHOOL WASN'T OUT
YET!

Another shoddy, disgraceful performance by the USCF office in
putting these events together. Our two national championship events for
juniors deserve better than this.

I posted standings for the US Junior and US Cadet as I received them. I
would have uploaded games, but never received any. ICC has relayed games
from past years US Junior and US Cadet, and would have done so this year if
they had been available.

Hal, I am going to make sure that we get great coverage for both of
these events.

Well, that just shows us the USCF lacks a certain "situational
awareness," among other shortcomings.

I have taken a group from Minnesota to the US Junior Open for many
years. This year we could not go because it was the last week of
school. They chose the US Junior Open for the last week of school for
many schools. I am sure they lost dozens of entries because of this.
It was disappointing to many kids.

The event was held as a Double Round Robin Quadrangular. That might
be suitable for a weeknight Action Swiss, but it seems obvious that had
there been better promotion, and had the dates of the event not
conflicted with the School years of many of the potentially eligible
players, they would have been able to garner more than 4 Entries

U.S. CHESS FEDERATION ANNOUNCES TWO MORE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS CROWNED
2005 U.S. Cadet Championship
(CROSSVILLE, TN) Kings Island, Ohio was the site of the 2005 U.S. Cadet
on June 12-16, 2005 where a close battle was waged between Elliott Liu
(2230), from California, and Sarkis Agaian (2123), from New York. A
double round robin was played to determine the title of U.S. Cadet
Champion and it was so close that a playoff was used to determine first
place and the scholarship. Although both Liu and Agaian are considered
co-champions, Liu earned the four-year scholarship which was offered by
University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC).

The tournament was organized by the United States Chess Federation and
the Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau and directed by Mike
Anders.

The U.S. Cadet Championship is an invitational tournament held every
year for the top players under 16 years old.
