Default Al Lawrence and Wife Seriously injured in Car Accident

Al Lawrence and his wife were involved in a serious automobile
accident last week, apparently while driving to the US Open Chess
Championship and delegates meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Al is employed by the World Chess Hall of Fame. Previously, he worked
for 15 years for the United States Chess Federation including 8 years
as Executive Director. Prior to that, Al Lawrence was a high school
teacher in Nebraska. Al is also a rated chess expert.

Al's wife was more seriously injured. She has had an operation to
remove her spleen. Both are expected to survive.

If true, I wish Al and Daphne all the best. I hope their injuries are
not serious.

If she had an operation to remove her spleen, it was serious.

I am advised that Al was not seriously injured, but that his wife was
in critical condition as of yesterday, 8/16. I trust I speak for all in
wishing them both a full recovery.

"Jürgen R." If Sam Sloan had a car Peter Leko would still be alive.

I am now advised that Mrs. Lawrence is considered to be out of danger.

Al really is one of those guys who has done so much for chess, you
really just have to feel awful about it. We need more guys like him...
hope all goes well for his wife too; nothing is worse than when a
couple is sunk into this kind of situation.
