You just gave Mr. Innes the lead quotation in this week's "Parrot".
True, it's cut in such a way that it doesn't represent your views, but
why should a little thing like journalistic standards get in the way of
a Parrot screed?

I wonder how many of those threatening to leave the USCF because of
Evan's being dropped from Chess Life will actually carry out their threat?
And to those that do not renew, how long will they stay away? Who do
they think they're hurting by quitting an organization they want to be a
part
of? And what would be the likelihood of Parr informing us on rgcp that
so-and-so came back?

Larry Parr, turning to his left shoulder, replied:

Evans cancellation or a carefully measured one or two
letters agin' and fer, suggesting a divided house.
The latter is the smarter and more likely ploy."

Well - let's see what happens - I just posted the following at Nolanland:-

May I ask why there has been no announcement in these forums nor in
ChessLife that 3 GM columnists have been fired by a consultant/contractor
who receives $50,000 for redesigning ChessLife and USCF's website without
undertaking a competitive bidding process?

The fired GMs include Larry Evans. The firings do not appear to be based on
the popularity of the columnists, and no objective surveys have been made in
order to make these draconian decisions.

Phil Innes

Denial. Larry Parr is already in denial, and the letters have not
even been written yet!

Yes, there will be a "divided house", an assortment of varying
opinions on the issue of Chess Life having dropped Evans' column. The
ones in favor of reinstatement have a good reason to write in to
complain, because that may be the only chance to get what they want (if
there is any chance). The others could write in to say nasty things
about Evans' column, but I wonder if it wouldn't be in bad taste to
print them. Do editors even consider such things? Once upon a time,
this would have been considered poor form because you don't kick a man
while he's down; today, however....

I somehow doubt the "blackout" possibility, as that would seem to
automatically draw heavy fire from the Evans ratpackers. This would be
akin to Fischer writing in to give Evans a good toungue-lashing for
daring to print negative comments about him in his CL column, and
Evans, upon reading the letter, deciding to just toss it in the trash
-- as if that would be the end of the matter.

IMO, Larry Parr is in denial. It's something like when you suffer
overwhelming pain, and the body goes into shock, avoiding reality. But
denial affects only the brain. The reality is that there is a wide
range of opinion regarding the dropping of Evans' column, a fact which
LP has decided to simply ignore.

This is Mike Nolan's strange reply to Phil Innes because Dan Lucas,
the new editor, cited the consultant's redesign report as the basis
for his decision to eliminate three beloved grandmasters from Chess
Life:

Those decisions were not made by the consultant, they were made
by the editor of Chess Life.

His name is Daniel Lucas, his e-mail address is .
I suggest members contact him directly.

There have been several threads regarding this subject.

As you do not appear to have been a USCF member since 1996,
why is this matter of any concern to you?

That's exactly correct, there was a recommendation from the consultant
but the decision was made by the editor. As a consultant to the USCF
myself, I have made numerous recommendations to the USCF Executive
Director and/or Executive Board, and the decisions of the ED
or the Board have not always been to follow my recommendations.

I suspect that not all of recommendations being made by the consultants
with regards to the redesign of Chess Life and the website are being
followed, either.

Mike Nolan sure is splitting hairs.

Now he says the recommendation was made by the consultant
but that the editor made the decision.

Where is the redesign report where these recommendations
were made by the $50,000 consultant?

Let's see it the report!

Let's see your $50,000!

Hey, that's our dues money!

Let's see the report our $50,000 is being used for.

Since contacting the editor is futile, Mike Nolan will be good
enough to provide the e-mail for Paul Hoffman who is getting OUR MONEY.

Maybe Ken Sloan doesn't care. But I and many other
USCF members do care.
