THE REMORSE OF CHESS

I'm a pretty lousy player but I have discovered brilliancies
(that I didn't play) while driving home from my games. On one
trip home from Philadelphia after the Liberty Bell Open, my
room mate and I missed our exit and almost wound up in
Scranton because we were distracted about a position from
one of his games. -- Angelo

This is reminiscent of a passage in H.G. Wells' essay on chess in 1901:

An interesting observation on that website relates how chess players regret
their bad moves for the rest of their lives. How childish, how maladaptive
to life in general, but how true! Playing Bxh7 against Peter Winston in the
1968 Greater NY Junior HS Championship, my choice of the Pirc against that
same player 2 years later in the HS tournament (I lost in 12 moves), and Qc4
against Steve Ferrero about 7 years ago (which led to me losing TWO ROOKS on
two consecutive moves) still haunt me.
