Default wtd: chess clock recommendation

I'm looking for a recommendation for a chess clock to
get as a present for a nephew. He's used to analog but
I think I'd like digital to allow for increment play. He isn't
active in USCF as far as I know. I'd also like to know a
good place to get it, reliably, and well, uh, fast. :-)
I haven't kept up with the market and I haven't seen a
discussion of them in a while.

Get a Chronos digital chess clock. These are the best IMHO.

www.chesshouse.com sells them for $99 each. That looks
like about as good a price as you will find. I don't know
anything about that vendor so you should look around. Maybe
Amazon.

Thanks Duncan. I took a look at those and noticed that
there is an older version and a sensor version. While
I accept that less moving parts (sensor) might be
more robust, I tend to trust mechanical switches
more than sensors for longevity. Has there been any
consensus developed as to the preference between
the two models?

I only have experience with the older version. People
I know have had them for years and used them for
blitz chess and the switches seems to hold up fine.

Both models hold up well. I have the old button style, and it's
survived numerous time scrambles and blitz games. I di like the sensor
model too, and if I ever need to replace my current chronos I'd
propably get the sensor buttons model. The sensor buttons barely need
to be touched to start up the opponent's clock. However if you're used
to punching the clock with a captured piece the sensor buttons don't
respond when hit with a piece.

I hate it when people do this to my clocks. Maybe this
is a way to break people of this.

It's something I hadn't thought of though. Hmm, I might want
buttons.

Are there any opinions about the DGT plus? The recipient
is not a commited player and might not justify the
top of the line; I'd want increment modes and this one
has them. Any general complaints about it? I haven't
come across any.

I have been a beta-tester of this clock prior to its release (DGT
projects gave me software simulation back than) and can honestly say I
was impressed with it. The only problem is that it doesn't support
periods, but that was done for a reason, as to not compete with DGT
2000 or DGT XL models. I was not able to find any bugs in it back than
and have not heard about any afterwards,

Definitely DGT EASY PLUS is the clock of choice for chess games with
only one time control, or as a move timer for games like Scrabble.

Chess House seem to be out of stock as of this writing, so you may want
to check my Ebay listing instead.(smile).

Thanks Mike. I did go with the DGT + and fortunately got the
order in before they ran out. I just checked tracking and it
was delivered yesterday. I'll report any problems but it sounds
like that won't be necessary.
