brainfart wrote: samsloan wrote... Impeach Bush for Closing the Post Office I just came back from the post office. I went there to mail some DVDs that I had sold online. I was outraged to discover that the post office was closed for the Funeral of President Ford. The Post Office nationwide closed for a funeral! Outrageous. I have bills to pay, work to get done, a family to support. Am I supposed to stop everything just because a former president died? Impeach Bush. How many billions of dollar will the US Economy lose because the post office is closed one day for the former presidents funeral? You gotta looka that as a positive, Whenever the post office closes we have always shifted more junk mail to net mail. So it''s a benny for everybody. Presidents often declare national days of mourning, such as when the space shuttle crashed. I'm certain that it is completely legal and constitutional, but what is illegal and unconstitutional is a president who decrees himself the authority to ignore any or all sections of any or all laws he disagrees with, such as yesterday's signing statement in which he decreed himself the authority to open your mail without a warrant, despite a very clear federal law that requires such a warrant. That is what Bush should be impeached for, along with wiretapping our telephones. |

Presidents often declare national days of mourning, such as when the space shuttle crashed. I'm certain that it is completely legal and constitutional, but what is illegal and unconstitutional is a president who decrees himself the authority to ignore any or all sections of any or all laws he disagrees with, Like Bill Clinton? A friend of mine, an unabashed, unrepenting, unreconstructed New Dealer, commented last month to me that he *knows* torture and other mayhem occurred during the administration of Bill Clinton (his hero). However, he was appalled that such practices have become codified under this president. As a conservative/libertarian, I must agree. Like most red-blooded Americans I think no-good scumbag enemies of this country who pose a serious threat should be tied to the celing, by their testicles, and tortured until they sing. I don't even care what they sing. They can sing "Sugar Magnolia" to the tune of "Autumn Leaves" for all I care. But I *do not* want such policies codified or promulgated as "the law of the land." Let me be clear: You can't stop official torture, but it's sometimes (rarely) necessary as an exceptional form of coercion. The effect of pronoucing it legal, however, is to desensitize citizens to the abuse of such tactics. Did I smoke a joint last night? NO! But if Chief Pritchett thinks I was smoking a joint, and he applied a cattle prod to my gonads to extract information to the contrary, he would probably get it. Torture is a slippery slope. Its justification in law is a flagpole covered with Crisco. |
