LOOK TO THE FUTURE
Instead of digging in the dirt of past dealings, I'd like to see EB members focus on the future. -- Chess Freak There we have it: the official party line. Don't delve into dirty deals in the past. Look to the future. That has always been the official line. Okay, our hand is in the till. Okay, our financial statements are wrong. Okay, the building in Cross-to-Bear may actually be a debit rather than an asset. Okay, we line our pockets. But if you delve into all of those dirty deals, then we won't be able to continue our ways in the future. So just look to the future, and forget what we did in the past and are doing at this very moment. To ensure that the future will be as dirty as the past, the best method is to look into the future without cleaning the USCF Augean stable. Do you really believe that it is possible to break the key out of the ignition of a moving car and thereby cause it to stop? I have never heard of this being done. Or is it just possible that Groff made up this entire story just to get a conviction? Sam Sloan |

Don't delve into dirty deals in the past. Look to the future. Don't learn from history, blunder ahead, er, but walking backwards, chanting non-stop one's 'achievements'? That has always been the official line. Okay, our hand is in the till. Okay, our financial statements are wrong. Okay, the building in Cross-to-Bear may actually be a debit rather than an asset. Okay, we line our pockets. Hamiltonian! But that's a jibe. But if you delve into all of those dirty deals, then we won't be able to continue our ways in the future. So just look to the future, and forget what we did in the past and are doing at this very moment. What does seem true is that USCF's begging bowl so often seems like a colander. Not just to me, but to all sponsors these past 10 years. What is in particualr question for me, is if the somewhat indiscriminate approach of Sam Sloan's investigation do not uproot as much good will planted for the future, as it does sad sickly stalks, poking out of the sand pretending they are camelias. Sam Sloan has made himself scarce in response to my 'threat' to interview him. I have some specific reservations about Sam Sloan completely independent of the sort of self-mockery practised here by projectionists of their own estate, to which they possess no irony, as any C15th witch hunter. To be fair to Sloan, if only int he sense that my criticism is general, I have the same objections about orientations of others too. The more I ask, eg, about the principal of allowing offended constituencies to speak their mind and suggest remedies, the more deafening the silence. No one, it seems, wants to hear about it. OTOH - it is a mess out there! If anyone wanted to know what death was like they should either:- a) consider the informed commentary of the group of genius-level people running the federation at the moment, or b) go to Des Moines, Iowa. To ensure that the future will be as dirty as the past, the best method is to look into the future without cleaning the USCF Augean stable. Yes. To offer another criticism, much as I asked George John when he was here and prosing about 'transparency' in governance, I should like to ask Candidate Randy Bauer who also perceives the need for competencies and accountability, HOW will he achieve that? But as with Sloan, the 'how' of that is confabulated with other factors which limit - often severely - their scope. Sloan is in some danger of adopting the 'Alexander solution' to the Gordian knot, which is to say, to simply chose a more conscious form of severance from this life. My number is 917-507-7226. You may call me any time. Chessville's interviews are always conducted in writing by first posing questions and then receiving answers to them, and are 'on the record' in the 'hand' of the participant, as may be proven by server records. There are no exceptions, since otherwise legal confusions of misrepresentation and interpretation can arise. This, Sir, is the proper way to do it. Initially I asked both new board members if they should like to answer the same questions, but I think the other person is himself embroiled in a CJA ethics mess and unresponsive - and lacking normal responses, I abandoned the issue. In terms of reader interest, questions to both candidates would be more interesting. I am not chasinig either person - since it seems more a propos to interview the 4 new candidates for the board on a range of questions which I already determined they would address. It takes time and energy to conduct a proper interview, and while I take the lead there is usually an editorial level of determining questions. Should an interviewee be serious, then the process can be started, otherwise, you know, if you ain't interested neither am I. To the real Sam Sloan: - I would perforce have to ask you questions which your critics ask and which may be uncomfortable to you. I can frame these questions rather better than your critics, and so this prospect would be a real challenge to accept. Most interviews cover a range of history of people's lives in chess, and also current events - to provide a context to current orientations.
