Default Qui Bono, qui custodia morum?

One glaring piece of evidence convicting Phil of this
cowardice is his
attacks on *** about sexual orientation.

I do not recall Phil saying anything about that. Did he ever say
that?

--
Certainly not! Last year the best memoire I read was a very moving work
indeed by a quiet british homo-sexual - Untold Stories by Alan Bennett - who
currently has a film around, The History Boys. The book ignores everything
except the qualities of things. This is some accolade from me!

And if that was the best book of last year, Bennett's US counterpart is Gore
Vidal, whose Point to Point Navigation I should recommend to any thinking
man for this year, as well as his extraordinarily terse and unglamorious
essay 'Inventing a Nation.'

I did not read better either side of the pond.

The issue has not to do with sexual orientation, but sexual predatory
activity, and a straightforward inquiry to matters of fact especially since
it relates to USCF.

Such subjects often attract commentators who sometimes have as much to work
out as, well, as you and I, but are not as disinterested.

My proposal is only novel in chess circles, and is more widely practiced
elsewhere - that those abused should speak for themselves, and suggest their
own remedies for their indisposition.

Who, though, wants to hear them?

Phil Innes

Default locus classicus: depressing & apt

Interesting textual crux in Juvenal's misogynistic Satire VI, courtesy
of Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire_VI

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quis_cu...os_custodes%3F

audio quid ueteres olim moneatis amici,
"pone seram, cohibe." sed quis custodiet ipsos
custodes? cauta est et ab illis incipit uxor.

I hear always the admonishment of my friends:
"Bolt her in, constrain her!" But who will watch
the watchmen? The wife plans ahead and begins with them!

But the version in the Oxoniensis Ms. is even blunter:

...noui
Ox29
consilia et ueteres quaecumque monetis amici, Ox30
'pone seram, cohibe'. sed quis custodiet ipsos Ox31
custodes, qui nunc lasciuae furta puellae
Ox32
hac mercede silent? crimen commune tacetur. Ox33

... I
know
the plan that my friends always advise me to adopt:
"Bolt her in, constrain her!" But who can watch
the watchmen? They keep quiet about the girl's
secrets and get her as their payment; everyone hushes it up.

So too Sloan: those who keep quiet about his misdeeds get a dirty
trickster at their service....
