Sam Sloan wrote: The New York Times has declared the Sloan vs. Truong lawsuit as one of the memorable chess events for the year 2007. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/30/cr...s/30chess.html The New York Times for December 30, 2007 states: Chess A Year of Great Chess Stories, Some True and Some Fictional So, is the accusation by SS one of the fictional stories? What will 2007 be remembered for in chess? Viswanathan Anand of India was crowned world champion after winning the title tournament in Mexico in September. Gata Kamsky of Brooklyn won the World Cup in December, earning the right to play Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria next year. The winner of that match will play for the championship. Two Americans, Jesse Kraai and Fabiano Caruana, earned the grandmaster title, Caruana doing it just before his 15th birthday. Five others - Salvijus Bercys, Robert Hess, Ray Robson, Bryan G. Smith and Emory Tate - became international masters. Even though I have many times accessed the ISCA Web site, I did not know that ET had earned the IM title. My limited knowledge has it that Indiana hasn't had an IM or GM since... well, since I played my first chess tournament. Perhaps the closest player was Loren Schmidt, at 2400+ before he moved to California and instantly gained 50 more rating points. His published articles mentioned a Leonid Bass, possibly an IM, but I never saw him play here. Samuel H. Sloan, a former board member of the United States Chess Federation, filed a lawsuit accusing two members of the board, Susan Polgar and Paul Truong of posting inflammatory remarks on the Internet under false names to win election. Perhaps the injection of an unproved motive, to win election to the board, is where fact ends and fiction begins... . Although thousands of books have been written about chess, 2007 stood out for its general-interest contributions. Among them were "The Kings of New York," by Michael Weinreb, about the chess team from Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn; "Kings Gambit," by Paul Hoffman, about his relationship to the game and some of its personalities; "The Yiddish Policemans Union," by Michael Chabon, a murder mystery involving a chess player and a fictional Jewish community in Alaska; and "Zugzwang," by Ronan Bennett, another murder mystery centered on the great St. Petersburg tournament of 1914. What a funky, *New York obsessed* point of view! Those books may well be of interest to New Yawkers, but come on... this was about *memorable* chess events of 2007. How about Rybka demolishing GMs at pawn odds? Or Sanny's GetClub program finally breeching the 1500 level? Or Gata Kamsky's comeback? Or Sam Sloan's surprising(?!) defeat of Bill Brock in the rgc grunge match? As always, there were outstanding games. One of the most beautiful moves of the year was made at the Pivdenny Bank Classic in June in a game between Boris Gelfand of Israel and Alexei Shirov of Spain. A test no doubt. The reader must find the move in question, not to mention the game itself... . I'm guessing whoever had White, and the move 1. e4! -- help bot |
