Anyway, the moves of a GM game are simply a recording of events that
took place. If the room is open to the public, reporters
should be able
to record the events and publish them. If they don't like it, they
should go play in a cave away from the public eye.

That is not really how things work under the law. For example,
reporters can attend a sporting event in a public place (e.g. SuperBowl)
and report on the event and outcome, but they are open to serious
liability should they record and broadcast/publish every play unless
given the rights to do so by those who hold that right. In the case of
Chess games played under USCF and FIDE rules, however, the chess
notiation belongs to the organizer, not the player. The players know
this going in (or should if they read the rules).
