I'm thinking it might (either that or Google itself farted it out a
million times to try to send a message to Sam) ;-)

At the same time, Bruce Draney has been reporting that various people
died in a car crash in Budapest ever since. We all know that Draney is
joking, but somebody not familiar with this "joke" might read this
newsgroup and conclude that the person in question really died.

Sam Sloan

Wake up Ishi...anything Draney would have to say even remotely related
to this is undoubtedly meant as a joke at YOUR expense...(which is
actually even funnier since you don't seem to "get" it). I hear that
years in Afghani jail can do that to you (among other things)...

O.K.

LOL!

"No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yes."

Now, you want to know what Sam DID do wrong-

A bunch of us were trying to confirm it. Nearly every Chess Journalist was
frantically e-mailing and calling each other and sources in Hungary to find
out. No one would ever consider posting ANYTHING publicly until we got some
real confirmation.

Sam attempted to scoop everyone on the story, and beat all the credible
journlists to it.

Of course, not only did Sam ruin the evening for everyone (as many had people
pounding down their doors asking about how Leko died), but he breached nearly
every journalistic ethic breaking a story like this as his own- for his own
glory.

So while all the good, thurough journalists never published a word about this,
due to hours of research and work, Sam had egg on his face, because he didn't
do an iota of work.

If only Sam was embarrassed by all this... :-/

BOOZ AND "BERKLEY"

By Larry Parr

Stan Booz is not so sure that Sam Sloan has more smarts -- as opposed,
presumably, to farts -- than The Historian. If that's really the case, we want
to get some betting action going. NOW.

Where's The Historian?

Historian? Historian? Come out, come out, wherever you are. We want
to match you up with Sam Sloan. Both of you can take a Stanford-Binet
intelligence test, and we are taking book offering a point spread of five,
which is two more than the margin of error.

If The Historian scores, say, 108 and Sam scores only 113, then those
betting on the former win. On the other hand, if The Historian hits 108 and
Sam comes through with, oh, about 143, then those betting on Sam win.

What could be more generous? We take Sam and give five points.

Not enough?

Given that Sam will bet on himself, the issue becomes, one supposes, how
many points handicap The Historian will require before plopping down his own
money.

We try to be reasonable, and if The Historian and his pal Stan Booz find
a five point spread too narrow, we are open to suggested odds.

Oh, yes, the word is "Berkeley" rather than "Berkley."

Default Will Sam Sloan Sue?

DAMNATION BY FAINT FEINT

By Larry Parr

"No, I'm not so sure Sam is smarter." -- Stan Booz on rgcp

How The Historian must hate Stan Booz! Here is the guy who
forced him to return to rgcp after he announced his departure because of fear
that Phil Innes was about to sue him for libel.

Mr. Booz stuck a steel rod up The Historian's spine, passing it
through his favorite orifice in the process. The Historian had wanted to
depart, but our Hopper would not let him go. No way.

So The Historian has stayed on, hurt and all, still pouting.

Now, in the latest dispute over how many points Sam Sloan would have
to spot The Historian in an intelligence test to prompt real bookmaking action,
Mr. Booz has weighed in with what can only be called damnation by faint feint.

"No, I'm not so sure Sam is smarter," he writes. The Historian
understands what the phrase means. It means that Mr. Booz is fairly sure that
Mr. Sloan would prevail in any intelligence test, though for form's sake, he
entertains some room for doubt.

Certainly, The Historian had reason to expect better of his old pal
who bears responsibility for forcing his ally to hang on here. Surely, The
Historian might have hoped for a bit of fellow creature feeling from his ally.

But no. Mr. Booz ain't about to place his money on the mental
equipment inside the thick walls of The Historian's skull. Yet he could have
been kinder with the man who has loyally stood by him.

We await The Historian's arrival. We look forward to discussing with
him the betting odds he expects when matched up again ol' Sam in an IQ test.

Maybe out West but back here in Philly we pronounce it "Berkley". Also, we
put the period outside of the quotation in this instance.

Even though it is incorrect to do so?

No. I do it because I am of the opinion that it is not incorrect.

WEAKNESS IN BOOZ?

By Larry Parr

Why can't Stan Booz be a stand-up guy? He should simply admit that he
did not know how to spell "Berkeley," a word that he rendered as "Berkley."
His excuse that one says "Berkley" in Philly is ironic because one also says
"Berkley" in Berkeley. One also spells "Berkeley" as "Berkeley" in Philly,
though one admits there are many these days in Berkeley who might spell it as
"Berkley."

Not Sam Sloan, though. After all, he's not in Berkeley.

True enough, there are Berkleys in Michigan and Massachusetts, but the
search engine at Yahoo summed it up best when we typed in "Berkley." It asked
whether we meant to write "Berkeley."

As for Mr. Booz placing the period outside "Berkeley" at the end of a
sentence, we are convinced that he would do so. However, nearly all American
stylebooks place the period inside the quotation marks in such an instance.
The Walsh Plain English Handbook would be a good place for Mr. Booz to begin
his researches. Another key source would be the AP Stylebook.

We begin to fear that Mr. Booz is a product of the Philadelphia public
school system, though we do not insist on a fact more unattractive than the
dead bodies of Saddam Hussein's sons.

Nope; Bucks County. I'm aware of what's in the Style books. Many say the
period placement is a matter of taste. I ran it by my wife who also is a
product of Bucks County schools and the English Department of Ursinus
College. She preferred it outside the quotes in that instance. I might add
that she spent her early childhood in Saudi Arabia and she found the dead
bodies of your heroes quite attractive.

As to the spelling of Berkley, of course I spelt it wrong. I was commenting
as to why. I'd be more impressed if you could show fault in the issues.
Instead you concede the issues and peck at the minutiae. I am reminded of a
chicken that pecks in the ground eating, tasting, and swallowing whatever it
finds. One of those few animals that ****s where it eats.
