Maybe he prefers the British style.

It would certainly be a sad state of affairs if we all adopted a
journalist's stylebook. I'm not sure that there are enough clichés to go
around.

Why can't Stan Booz be a stand-up guy? He should simply admit

that he did not know how to spell "Berkeley," a word that he rendered as
"Berkley."

West coast critcs simply can't see that names like "Alaska" may well be
rendered as "'Lasker" by easterners, with their pidgeon English. "Berkeley"
sounds much like Berkley or Berkly, even. "California" ends up as "Kalifornia"
in the movies, and we all have known someone who mispronounces "Washington" as
"Warshington."

Of course, these same western critics will (unwittingly) mispronounce "Nyw
Yawk" as "New Yowrk," and are speechless when queried as to what kind of pie
Florida's islands are famous for.

Still, it is understandable that a western surfer-dude critic may take
exception to having one of "his" proud cities' names misspelled by a foreigner
(Philadelphian).

Jeezus-Pleezus! Was all that really necessary over so small a thing?

Excuse me? SMALL a thing?? I'll have you know that the ommission of a vowel
quite often causes the loss of an entire syllable, and that, in turn, could
lead to the death of a word, or even a sentence! If we let them get out of
control, the misspellers will soon be invading our paragraphs, then our very
homes -- taking away our freedom of speech and then, our guns and chess sets.
We have to nip them in the bud! Don't just sit there and do nothing, while
these evil villains *take over* the internet. Stop them, before it's too late!

Most westerners think Pennsylvania is the capitol of Philadelphia.

Now, you want to know what Sam DID do wrong-

A bunch of us were trying to confirm it. Nearly every Chess Journalist was
frantically e-mailing and calling each other and sources in Hungary to find
out. No one would ever consider posting ANYTHING publicly until we got some
real confirmation.

Sam attempted to scoop everyone on the story, and beat all the credible
journlists to it.

Of course, not only did Sam ruin the evening for everyone (as many had

people
pounding down their doors asking about how Leko died), but he breached

nearly
every journalistic ethic breaking a story like this as his own- for his own
glory.

So while all the good, thurough journalists never published a word about

this,
due to hours of research and work, Sam had egg on his face, because he

didn't
do an iota of work.

If only Sam was embarrassed by all this... :-/

You know why he's not? It's simple. Sam's "Breaking Rumors" makes him Johnny on
the Spot when the rumor is true. No one remembers that he didn't do any work,
nor had any details, just the rumor, with him expounding on it.

Interesting theory.

It is true that I am often the first person to go public with a story
which has been bouncing around among people in the know.

So, what is wrong with that?

For example, I just broke the story that Frank Niro signed a three
year deal with Games Parlor. John Fernandez did not know this and he
has been commenting on it non-stop ever since.

I did not originate the story. An insider gave it to me in confidence,
knowing that I never reveal my sources. I simply blasted it out.
Otherwise, John Fernandez might never have known about it.
