If only one organizer (for the purposes of this discussion) makes a profit, and a significant one at that, what happens when that organizer retires? My idea is that the possibility exists that chess in the US would go the way of the majority of chess clubs out there, which is: one person gets a bug up their butt, and does everything ... runs tourneys, does the ads, the footwork, the organizing, site procuring, signs the checks ... and burns out in a year or two. The club does extremely well till this guy stops showing up, and all of a sudden, the chess club dies. Please don't let this happen nationally. sandirhodes |

"Bill Goichberg. It was reported he makes 300,000 a year. How else could he
afford those fancy cars he drives. (StanB) ============== I know nothing about BG's personal finances but it seems to me he began his career as a chess promoter with a lot of money... maybe family money. I don't think he started small and worked his way up the financial ladder from chess alone. If he makes $300,000 per year I'd doubt all comes from chess tournaments. He must have some non-chess investments or business activities. (RSHaas) |

Mikel would have been the computer professional on the Board that I have long thought might be needed to get the upgrade finally done. Why do you think that having a computer professional on the board would get the upgrade done? A lot of us cheered when Dorsch was elected treasurer because we thought that meant we would finally start getting some answers about the USCF's crazy finances. We were dreaming. Even as treasurer, Dorsch was never allowed to find out the answers, and we don't know many of the answers even to this day. If computer nerds are going to be of any help with the upgrade, they have to be in the office getting the work done with the full backing of the ED. (Supposedly that is happening now--we'll see). Merely having them on the board driving from the back seat doesn't sound especially useful. |

I don't think he started small and worked his way up the financial ladder from chess alone. I started running tournaments full time in 1967 with no money. For about 25 years I barely got by, probably averaging less than the minimum wage. About 1993-1994 I learned how to do things better and since then have averaged about $75,000 income per year. If he makes $300,000 per year I'd doubt all comes from chess tournaments. He must have some non-chess investments or business activities. I have never made $300,000, or even half that, in one year. Anyone who claims that is probably using the "entry fees minus prizes" method of calculation, overlooking other expenses (for instance, CCA sends out about 350,000 pieces of mail each year and pays another $50,000 or so for advertising). (recmate) ============== In that case you certainly took some daring risks in the old days. I remember CCA's Continental Open in Atlanta which drew almost 300 in a very untested market at that time. That single event doubled Georgia's USCF membership!! Because of what you did for chess in Atlanta you'll never find me among the critics of CCA's activities. (RSHaas) |

I hope to continue to contribute to the USCF, too, but if by the end of the Board of Delegates meetings there is no adequate, and explicit commitment, including the necessary funding, to the upgrade in the written plan, I intend to resign as a USCF Delegate and from all USCF Committees that I am currently a member, and will instead fully devote my chess volunteer time to Houston and Texas chess. George, Frank Niro personally assured me that he intends to devote surplus funds from the building sale to the technology upgrade. But the sale has to happen, before he knows what's available. He told me this, because he saw your post in which you mentioned quitting your posts, and he was distressed by it. He said, "This is when we *need* him to help." Just passing on what I've been told. You may want to have your own conversation with Frank. Tim Hanke |

Dear Bill,
Heil Dubya! Most, if not all, of the characters who post these ad hominem attacks have no knowledge of chess history -- or of ANY history, for that matter. The claims that you have made $300,000 a year are simply intended to make people angry at you. Not only are they not based on any knowledge by the claimants, but they are lies made up from whole cloth. It is not worth your while to respond to them. Subject: What is going on with Frank N.?
