"Rather, the Board is supposed to put staff in place who are suited to their
roles, and help get staff the resources they need to accomplish their
respective missions." (Tim Hanke)
===============
No, Tim. The ED, Niro, puts staff into place who are suitable... and then the
Board hides the results of their work. The Crossville area has lots of
limestone caves that the Board can use for this purpose. (RSHaas)

That's right. The board is supposed to offer direction that's why they call
them the Directors. The Executive Director has the power to execute those
directions.

Ha!! You got rich running adult chess tournaments, huh? Name one
entrepreneur of adult chess tournaments that got rich since I first joined

in
1963.

Bill Goichberg. It was reported he makes 300,000 a year. How else could he
afford those fancy cars he drives.

I assume that you are joking. You must have seen the beat-up 20 year
old car that he drives.

Several months ago when I was trying to get USCF to respond to me about my
Chess Trivia Game, *nobody* ever got back to me despite repeated attempts on
my part.

That is because USCF is busy with the pre-production of USCF's new game
"Where's Niro?".

This game is sure to be a hit with the kids and is excellent preparation for
next year's National Geographic Geography contest.

If I remember correctly, first prize is $25,000.

Here are some of the questions:-P

Frank is hiding behind a cactus and there are oil wells near by?

Frank is near Blue Grass?

Frank is near the Golden Gate bridge?

Actually the "Where's Niro?" game does sound pretty fun. :-)

From what I've heard, USCF HQ is running Windows 95 on old
hardware--not a good situation.

Why? A friend of mine is CEO of an auto parts firm, a tough
business to be in these days. His company's computers are
still using Win95 and why shouldn't they? His hardware and
software still work fine running the same programs they were
running 8 years ago. A wise businessman won't make *any*
changes unless by doing so, he can see an increase in profits.

Unless there is some over-riding reason to upgrade, such as a
specific piece of software that *must* run on a newer system,
the USCF has no reason to throw money away on superfluous
computing power. I have personal experience with a government
agency that upgrades every three years without any regard for
necessity. In my opinion, the USCF should make no changes until
a comprehensive plan is in place which *requires* such a change.

Tim,

I first got the idea of becoming Secretary, when George John suggested it

on
this newsgroup some months ago.

Given your excellent writing skills, I think you could be a very good
Secretary. Should the Board elect you to that position, I strongly
recommend you call and/or write to Rachel L. who likely has as good a grasp
as anyone of what duties you would need to fulfill.

Later George turned against my candidacy and
voted for other people,

I voted for Beatriz, Mikel, and Steve. Given the large percentage of
student members, I liked having another scholastic representative on the
Board. Beatriz also worked in the office, is bilingual, and has many
international contacts -- all nice plusses. Mikel would have been the
computer professional on the Board that I have long thought might be needed
to get the upgrade finally done. Finally, Steve is someone with strong
business savvy, was an effective past USCF President, and someone with the
temperment to give this Board and ED the kick in the b--t, I think it needs
to get key items like the upgrade done. I temporarily overlooked his
apparant ties to the current FIDE leadership. Doing so wasn't easy.

You obviously do not know Steve Doyle very well.
