Default U.S. Open turnouts since 1992

The U.S. Open has not drawn more than 600 players since the event was held in
Boston in 1988. The following are the turnouts, according to USCF records, for
the past 11 years:

2002: Cherry Hill, N.J. = 502
2001: Framingham, Mass. = 480
2000: St. Paul, Minn. = 492
1999: Reno, Nev. = 482
1998: Kona, Hawaii = 304
1997: Kissimmee, Fla. = 518
1996: Alexandria, Va. = 515
1995: Concord, Calif. = 530
1994: Rosemont, Ill. = 470
1993: Philadelphia, Pa. = 368
1992: Dearborn, Mich. = 496

According to the USCF news release, they were expecting more than 600 players
for this year's Open in Los Angeles. What do the prognosticators say?

The 1989 US Open in Chicago (which I organized) drew 638 players. Reference:
Nov. Chess Life, page 24. GM Lev Alburt won the event. The 638 figure does
not include players in any side events.
