Default Why Do Chess Players Manage the Business of Chess?

The most active scholastic chess organizers and FCA and/or FSCL
directors in the State of Florida are relatively low rated players,
and most don't play actively at all, and yet the state of scholastic
chess in Florida, for example, is bright. So why does it appear that
to be a leader in Chess at the U.S. National level, one must generally
(with few exceptions) be a rated A player, Expert or Master? Does
knowing the game equate to knowing the business? Why not hire a
non-player as the next ED?

We did that last time and it was a disaster. That doesn't mean it couldn't
work out the next time. It just seems like it would be better to hire
someone who knows a little about chessplayers and chess.

So, who are some of the non-chessplayers that are long time political
stalwarts, both in FIDE and USCF? I know there are a number who are
inactive/former players, but who are the non-players?

You completely missed my point. You're using a different criteria. You're
applying professional players only to sports, and casual and professional
players to chess. You can't do that.

I think kidon and Kevin make some good points. I would agree that we
don't want someone who doesn't even know the rules of chess to run the
organization. I'm sure the NFL has never been run by someone who
deosn't know the rules of football. And here I'm not talking about
super technical rules like can you call a fair catch if the punt was
tipped or what happens if your have checkmate with a fallen flag etc.

Some knowledge is a big help but it has always struck me that
candidates would waste any more space with their chess accomplishments
than to indicate that they have a rating of XXXX. Of course, you
would think they wouldn't waste this space unless they thought it
would help them.

Why do chess players manage the business of chess? The Commissioner
of the NBA is not a basketball player, but rather the former lawyer
for the former-commissioner. The Commissioner of the NFL is not a
football player, but rather, the former lawyer for the former
commissioner. One of the most powerful men in MLB right now, Bob
DuPuy was the lawyer for the Milwaukee Brewers/Bud Selig (with my
prior law firm of Foley & Lardner), and as far as I know, was not a
professional ball player.

Simple answer: They don't. How many professional chessplayers have
been ED? Looking at the list in the July CL (p 36-37) I don't
recognize any who were (though possibly some of the early ones might
have been). In terms of president it appears to be only Marinello,
Dlugy and Koltanowski. Now most have been amateur chess players. But
isn't it also likely that the commissioners that you mention were also
amateur players, maybe high school, maybe backlot, etc. Your premise
is incorrect.

Depends. The more we pay him the better he'll be. Then again, 60,000 might
get you someone that will work like hell to earn his spurs.

Yes, by offering more money you can get more applicants
It doesn't follow that you can get better applicants. I would
be more impressed by someone who knows how to control
spending and who knows how to promote chess than I would
be by someone who made a high salary at their previous job
which they are no longer at.
