Default Membership submissions by state associations

As of July 1, 2003, here is the ranking of the state chess associations in the
order of memberships submitted to the USCF:

1. Michigan Chess Association MI 351
2. Maryland Chess Association MD 239
3. New Jersey State Chess Federation NJ 202
4. Massachusetts Chess Association MA 200
5. Pennsylvania State Chess Federation PA 194
6. Minnesota State Chess Association MN 170
7. North Carolina Chess Association NC 145
8. Colorado State Chess Association CO 138
9. Southern California Chess Federation CA 96

The membership submissions by other state chapters is unknown to the general
public, but it must be known to USCF office personnel.

Not sure that this is meaningful.

If an Illinois master cannot figure out the significance of this list, then no

one can. Other than Hadley Junior High School, the Latin School, the MacArthur
School, and Chess Utopia, how many USCF memberships is the Illinois Chess
Association submitting to the USCF? Or is it not concerned about getting new
memberships or membership renewals for the financially strapped federation.
Membership submissions by the state chapter should be indicative of the
activity of that chapter. That Michigan (with 351 memberships submitted) can
outdo the Southern California Chess Federation (with 96 memberships) tells me
that Michigan is more pro-active in getting USCF memberships and membership
renewals.

I don't understand why it matters.

memberships or membership renewals for the financially strapped federation.

Of course I'm concerned. But that doesn't relate to the list.

Or it could be indicative of nothing at all.

You're leaping to conclusions. What it more likely means is that those state
associations run more tournaments in which to take memberships. Here, we have
so many organizers that the state association only runs 2 events. Both are
after Labor Day. I would expect us to have a very low count of memberships
until after that point.

Here, people either renew directly or through organizers. Fall/winter chess
tournaments for kids bring in a lot of memberships.

I think there are concerns about ICA. I don't think that the argument you
present here has anything to do with any of them.

That is exactly my point! Those state assocations run MORE TOURNAMENTS.

OK. And my point is that that fact is not basically important.
