I prefer to be creative. If I have the time, I like to see how long I
can prolong the call without actually providing any information. My version: "I'm sorry but Allan isn't in right now. As you can well imagine the whole family is quite shook up by the tragedy. What did you say your name was????" |

I've gotten woken up many times by junk calls. Even if I don't answer, hang up, etc., being woken up too early still messes up my day. And turning off the phone isn't a happy solution, since I do want to be able to respond to emergency calls even if they come while I'm sleeping. Screening calls only works if you're close enough to hear the answering machine -- otherwise you have to run over and look at the caller-id. I used to work at home and got around twenty calls a day. About half of them had dead silence on the other end -- probably predictive dialers. I got a Telezapper and within a week it was down to 1 or 2 per day. I suppose it's just a matter of time until they circumvent that -- phone company marketeers seem to ignore it. The interruption is usually more annoying than the call. |
